I wonder how the torque compares to the little tractor in the background.

At least if it doesn’t flatten your crops, it’ll light them on fire?

I’ve seen very similar case steam traction engines pulling before, it’s very very cool.

Yeah, I wondered about that. My guess is they were getting extra sparky for the entertainment value.

I wonder where they store the water for all of that steam. I wouldn’t think they could plow more than one row without needing more water. and lots of flattened crops.

I suspect so as well. Tractor pulls are more about the spectators than all-out winning. Every few years I shoot pictures for the tractor pull in my home town, and they’re a pretty tight-nit group.

I like the tractor pull videos where the engine has so much boost that the top half of the block is expelled along with the heads in one giant lump. Looks to me like a very expensive hobby.

On a Case, the water tank is typically underneath the operator’s feet. The top of the tank is actually the floor of the cab. At least, that is the way it was on the 40 HP Case my dad used to own... I believe the 110 HP Case in the video would be similar. If you look at 1:06, the guy at the back of the engine with the red shirt would be standing on the top of the water tank. The waist-high parts next to him are the “Contractor’s Bunkers” that are used to hold the fuel (coal or wood). Other makes occasionally had water tanks in different places, such as hanging in front of the rear wheels or mounted above the smokebox door at the front of the boiler.

The sparks at the end of the video are for show; sawdust is thrown in the firebox to create them. However, a wood burner will put out quite a few sparks without any extra sawdust... :D

If you’re plowing, there’s no crops to flatten. Steam tractors are massive though, and have tons of torque. They’d probably still be the preffered tractor if diesel wasn’t so much easier. The amount of weight they cna pull is amazing.

I haven’t seen that happen, yet. Worst I’ve seen is someone blew some sort of metal plate out the exhaust of a turbine powered tractor, and it shot maybe 20 feet into the air.

It does seem like an expensive hobby.

Really big in Europe, too.
