Stupid TPMS is Stupid

I assume the battery in my right front sensor is dying so I get a random light and warning on my DIC that my right front tire is low, which it isn’t. The warning doesn’t bother me because I can dismiss it, the annoying light though does.

Kinja'd!!!

I really don’t wanna buy a new one because they’re kinda expensive, but I guess I’m gonna have to so I can get that dumb light off.

Also, a dumb complaint: Since my truck doesn’t have the full 4-button DIC system I don’t get a readout for each tire pressure I can check. I just get a “x tire low, check pressures” warning when they get low.

Hmm. I wonder if that’s the issue with our company car - we’ve had a wacky sensor for awhile. I guess it could be completely broken but the light is annoying as hell.

Mine are constantly on, on the Taco. If it’s just one PSI low (hyperbole), the light comes on.

Can the batteries be replaced, or do you have to throw away the whole sensor? That would seem to be quite a waste.

If it wasn’t so expensive to do, it would be nice if they could generate electricity like a self-winding watch - no battery needed.

I don’t think there’s any styles of tpms sensors out there that you can replace the batteries on. I know for a fact the ones GM uses can’t.

Yeah, but then how are the companies that make then supposed to make any money!

The batteries are good for about 7 years then they start going dumb. It could just need to be relearned to the car, I’ve had that happen to me before after I’ve take a wheel off a car and roll it across the shop to balance or patch it.

GMs don’t warn you until it’s 5 PSI under specifications iirc.

Sounds about right! They’re never going to pay to fix it but it does make an actual low tire a little harder to notice.

Well, when I was looking to get a second set for the extra wheels on the Mazda I found that I could get a complete set of four for $60, which is probably what Mazda would charge for just one.

This is a problem with my wife’s car right now. Except instead of being on ALL the time, it comes and goes randomly and BEEPS at you, in addition to flashing. It might do this 5 times in a minute, or once an hour. SO.... I pulled the fuse until I feel like buying four of these buggers and then paying a shop to install them, right after I just paid a shop to balance and align the whole system.

It’s like any other thing, like traction control. It’s basically a good idea, fine. JUST LET ME TURN IT OFF IT I WANT TO.

If this gives you an idea of what OEMs charge; our dealership uses aftermarket replacement instead of genuine GM on non-warranty because the genuine GM ones cost too much.

A *dealership* says oem is too expensive.

Some sensors have a door you can remove and replace the little coin battery in it. I know I’ve seen them before but GIS has nothing.

I did, however, find that people are removing the goop surrounding the batteries and replacing them:

I would lose my damn mind if my truck beeped and the light flashed instead of just stayed on constant.

TMPS saved my ass when going to the UP. Had a vertical split on one of my sidewalls at highway speeds. Probably wouldn’t have recognized it until it blew without the TMPS.

Agreed, my 09 S8 allows me to program it out so no warning lights. Handy for winter wheels sans sensors. My last car, a ‘12 S4 just used the abs sensors to tell you if you had an issue, so no sensors. But that was a dumb system too, wouldn’t give any specific tire, but at least I knew it wasn’t a sensor going bad. Now the older S8 shows all tire pressures and temps, even a slot for the spare of you have a sensor in it. Pretty cool.

Yes. So there is a right way to do it! My wife’s car is an 07 bmw, I don’t think the system was really well developed at that point, at least not in that car. Grrrr

My BMW does this occasionally, usually a TPMS reset (like when you install new ones) makes it go away. Worth a shot.
