I thought all was good with my Caravan, replace CV joints soon, etc... I was going down the highway and the van just gradually slows down by itself, engine hesitates to move and I pull over. Engine still runs, but hesitates anything over idle. Call my sister to pull me & dad home and while waiting the engine gets rougher and dies and will not start. ( about a year ago the PCM died a block away from the house, but died a quick death)
Back home, checked codes and there are none. Will do the ol ignition coil test tomorrow and see if PCM pin #10 is grounded out on the ignition.
Sheez I need a new car... money first.

Every time I see “PCM” I think “precision continuous mixer” because that’s what PCM meant at my last job.

My last girlfriend had a Caravan, and she got it for a song. After a few months of random electrical glitches and oddities we found out why. That PoS made my old Rabbit GTI seem reliable by comparison.

I forget - is the PCM that fancy fuse box that’s keyed to the VIN? That’s the part that was failing on my GF’s Caravan.

considering some of the stuff which gets said around here, I make few assumptions.
and besides, come on. it’s a 20-21 year old car. Expecting stuff not to break is silly. FWIW, I can’t remember the last time I saw a 20 year old Camry or Accord on the road.
cripes. cars used to be used up and dead in 5-7 years, now we expect them to be flawless at 20.

I spend a lot of time at junkyards, poking around and taking pictures (and occasionally grabbing a few interesting parts). Most of the vehicles are accident damaged, with a handful just eaten by the tin worm; this is the Midwest, after all. I know most of the newer vehicles don’t make it to these kinds of lots, but a handful do, mostly because of neglect.
It is impressive how long cars do last these days. I know the ‘joy’ of keeping older vehicles on the road, with the E21 going about 25 years before I sold it to a friend, and the E34 still going after 28 years. The troubleshooting becomes more involved and the problems even weirder, but that’s just part of the charm of driving a classic.

Nope. PCM died. Crank sensor and cam sensor pins on the PCM are grounding out on the ground pins.

If you get a van (any vehicle for that matter) cheap, chances are it’s going to have issues. Goes with the territory.
