I’ll buy some aftermarket HIDs for my GTI. Then I can have those cool LED U-shapes like all the cool kids.

Except now my low-beams don’t work and I have check bulb warning lights on my dash.

I had the shop I’ve taken my cars to for years now install them and I trust they installed them correctly as the kit is fairly idiot-proof.

The kit came with an in-line resistor and the (very highly regarded and reputable) seller suggested removing that adapter from the circuit. The shop tried that this morning and it did not change anything. (They did only try it on one light, but the lights should be separate circuits so I fail to see how the car would need both resistors removed.)

The only thing I changed after we tested the lights at the shop, was to set the sensitivity for the auto-light function from early to middle.

I’m inclined to think it’s a bad ballast or ignitor, but I haven’t heard back from the seller yet. I am also being vague as I do not want to cause unnecessary drama when this could be easily resolved.

Very possibly a DOA ballast, I would say.

Well, hmm. Here’s where I ask a very stupid question, and that is, are all the fuses good? It’s definitely not impossible for something to have caused a big load during setup and/or a short. Outside of that, the little module-majob that detects an out light tends to have a resistor in the setup that it balances vs. the load to trigger the light, but I don’t know if the VW has a setup advanced enough to do anything other than warn you - like trip out. I would think if they’re selling the setup for your car that it would have been tested, so...

Bad parts do tend to come in lots, though, so having two bad ballasts is not out of the question.

Have they put this product on this particular car model? I put some aftermarket HIDs in my Saab and they didn’t work very well (flickering, ‘bulb out’, couldn’t turn on when it was cold) and it turned out after poking around with an oscilloscope that the computer was giving them nasty pulses designed for halogens. I reprogrammed it to think it had factory Xenons and they work perfectly now.

These lights are well known within the VW community and I rarely see any issues that aren’t user-error when they are installed. They are designed so that they only need be installed and should work without additional coding; apart from adding the cornering lights, which I knew about and expected to need to do on my own later.
