I’m kinda-not-really shopping for a new truck. I’ve always liked the look of the Ford Excursion so I was looking at them on Craigslist. Now, I’d prefer a diesel, but I’m not opposed to a gasser either. Good lord though, people have got to be crazy to buy the diesels with how they are priced. The gassers are all somewhere between $5k and $7k it seems, the diesels are 2-3x that much. I saw from $15k to $20k!
How does anybody buying these justify spending 3x the money just for the diesel? Even with the diesel it would take years to break even based on fuel economy vs buying the gasser.

diesel is king in the heavy duty truck game, the same applies to super duties and 2500/3500s from chevy and ram/dodge, if its got a diesel the price is high and people pay them. that said you dont want a diesel excursion, the 6.0L powerstroke is known for all kinds of issues. what you want is the triton V10 gas motor

Yeah, it’s insane. I mean, I know the diesel engines last forever (well, the 7.3 anyway), but it’s still a nearly 20 year old Ford.

Excursions had the 7.3 up until 2003. Also, I’d take a well- sorted 6.0 over the v10 any day.

If I’d get a diesel it would have to have the 7.3, but seeing those prices I’d take the V10 any day. They may get crap mileage, but it would take years of driving for me to break even, and the V10 is a pretty reliable engine too.

Because the gas engined excursion was/is literally the stupidest car made within the past quarter century, and only idiots buy them.
The city/highway mileage is only half the story, as soon as you start towing anything it goes right into the shitter, not the case with the diesel.

Not sure when Ford switched to the 6.0, but the first of the Excursions definitely came with the 7.3

I had a buddy buy a V10 with 150K+ on it. Did some minor cosmetic work, plowed with it for 2 seasons, and sold it for about double what he paid/put into it. Still running and he got it looking quite nice before he sold it.

because they are much better. more reliable and fuel economy is better. The excursion is the heaviest SUV made so the gas motor really sucks fuel.
and the diesel versions were ususally the top of the line ones if i remember correctly

Ford’s V10 is actually pretty reliable from what I’ve heard. Yea, the fuel economy sucks, but if it takes over 40k miles just to break even is it worth it?

they arent bad but they arent a powerstroke haha. and spark plugs on the v10 suck to replace.
ive never seen them that marked up when i looked at them but if it was me id be getting the powerstroke. 9-10mpg vs 15-16mpg (what i get in my f350 powerstroke)

That’d be kind of cool, but I’m more so window shopping at the moment. I probably won’t actually be serious about buying anything until later this year. Between owing the IRS lots of money and just buying a boat our finances are a bit slim at the moment.

Honestly I think it’s more trouble than it’s worth. The owner also owns a restaurant, so it makes sense for him as he has to drive long distances, and has access to the cooking oil. He’s got the whole “refinery” setup in his garage. The car smells the entire time its running!

I have a 2500 V10 and I reliably get 14 mpg whether I’m pulling a trailer or it’s empty. And by trailer I mean 8000#.

40k isn’t that bad, I’ve put much more than that on many of my vehicles. But if it’s something you’re only going to drive 1-2k miles per year, then there’s no need for the diesel.

That’s pretty good towing MPG and in general. One of my buddies has a Dodge 1500 with the V8 and gets somewhere around 8 mpg towing and 12 mpg empty.

That is a good question. Hes got some sort of fuel controller, so I imagine there is a fuel map for standard diesel. Then again I’m unfamiliar with the process for converting to bio diesel.

Ah. I understand now. No, his plan from the beginning was to flip it. He acquired it for a ridiculously cheap price. Heck, even the guy who bought it off him didn’t do too bad looking at those prices...
I don’t have that kind of luck. I bought the Lincoln I have for an intended flip. My kids LOVE the thing and it’s been an absolute tank of a daily driver. Now I have too many cars, lol.

I had a ‘96 with the 360 and it got about 15, which is what I would call decent for a truck of the time. When I towed my boat (3000#) that would be closer to 12 I think, it’s been a good long time since I had it. I think it has to do with how you drive as much as where honestly. My truck sees mostly highway miles, probably 75%, so that’s probably why I see better mpg than most as well.
