One of the perks of working in aviation is that you often have access to ID travel. Known under multiple names like ID90 for example, it’s basically just hugely discounted standby travel tickets. The standby part meaning that you have to be flexible and a bit more savvy in the planning, but it pays off in savings on ticket price.

For example, a return ticket from Warsaw to Tokyo in economy for €170 instead of €1200 via Skyscanner... But... it is standby, so if the flight fills up, you’re shit out of luck and have to catch the next one or rebook. Luckily you can monitor the booked amount of passengers in our system, so you can kind of plan alright.

To the point now... I have a vacation coming up, so decided to go to New York using these cheap tickets. I will have about three full days to spend in New York, staying in Queens/Long Island City with easy access to the ‘main’ city.

Any tips on what to do/see that’s kind of outside the standard stuff like High Line Park/Museums/Empire State etc etc? Those are kind of been there done that things (literally, I was there four years ago for a few days).

Here’s a brown, manual wagon from Amishshop.com for your time:

Yeah....best advice? Pick somewhere that isn’t New York.

Depends on what you are into, you can find pretty much everything (other than peace and quiet) in NYC. Use the subway, it actually works pretty well. Don’t talk to anybody or look at anybody. I really like the bridges in the area, just admiring the engineering is entertainment to me - particularly the Brooklyn, George Washington, and Verazzano. The Hudson River Greenway is a pretty cool bike path and biking within the city is fun in a masochistic kind of way. Of course there are endless places to get really good pizza and then some really good off-broadway shows for cheap. Washington Square park is another cool place to visit, with Shake Shack, Insomnia cookies, and Peanut Butter Co (Peanut Butter BLT is the shit!) nearby.

Go here for beer: https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-jeffrey-craft-beer-and-bites-new-york . It’s literally next to the Queensboro bridge, so it’s convenient as a last stop.

Tomi Jazz is a fun place to get unusual Japanese beers and Japanese bar food: https://www.yelp.com/biz/tomi-jazz-new-york part of the fun is that it’s hard to find and you have to be buzzed in.

Smalls is a great jazz club, but the cover kind of sucks: https://www.yelp.com/biz/smalls-jazz-club-new-york

Don’t talk to anybody or look at anybody.

I disagree. Tourists in New York should always ask for directions, because there is nothing anyone in New York loves more than giving directions.

Well, it’s not like the rest of the US is all that appealing anyway...

Some good tips, thanks!

I managed to find my way all by my lonesome self last time as well without disturbing any precious New Yorkers so I think I’ll be alright.

If you haven’t been anywhere but NYC, I can see why you’d say that, but you’re also allowed to be wrong.

Don’t talk to anybody or look at anybody.

I visited family in NJ and NY every summer as a kid, and this is the one piece of advice my dad always gave me about walking around NYC.

Those are the tourists who moved to New York.

I have not been to all of the States but have seen a fair bit more than just NYC ;). Yes, it has it’s nice places. But in general I would look to places in Europe if I want to see landscapes or history in person. Towns on a grid, strip malls and food exits don’t really do it for me. If you are going to be snarky and only offer “don’t go to NYC”, I’m going to be snarky back.

Drinks - beer gardens are all over. Good bars in downtown. mcsorley’s old ale house for instance. Shit hole...but could be fun depending on your age

Food:
BBQ - Daisy Mays West side. 46th st and 11th ave. Oklahoma rib! I think. Been a while
Chinese - Joe Shanghai - Soup dumplings! Chinatown.

I’ll double down on don’t talk to anyone and don’t look at anyone. Tape a phone book to your torso on the front and on the back. Last couple of years there were face slashings. Be careful on subway. If anyone is looking at you for longer than 2 seconds, move. run. hide.

NYC is way over rated. You can get beer and bbq and chinese food pretty much anywhere. I would pay extra to never go to NYC ever again.

I’ll go in full combat gear, don’t worry. It’s already packed.

Besides that, thanks for the tips! :)

Meh, New Yorkers are always friendly in my experience. Yea some people are in a rush, but I strike up conversations and crack jokes to random strangers all the time and so does everybody else. It’s also the safest big city in the US currently.

In terms of stuff to do, touristy stuff: The Intrepid (space shuttle, sr-71), Whitney Museum, walk across the Brooklyn bridge and explore hipster DUMBO Brooklyn, Guggenheim, The New Museum, Eataly.

Less touristy stuff: rent a kayak on the Hudson, rent a car and explore the Hudson valley/Catskills (fantastic driving roads), get fried chicken in Harlem (Sylvias), bar crawl, street festivals (always going on in warmer months), Staten Island ferry (it’s free!), Roosevelt Island Tramway, if it’s warm Jones Beach/Robert Moses/Fire Island or, comedy shows/live music/opera/philharmonic/broadway shows, ride a bike around Governor’s Island.

I’ve seen, and have been involved in, full blown arguments on the subway over directions that have continued on after the person who asked for directions left the train.

It’s funny because I say it jokingly but it really is true. I kinda like it, it’s why it actually feels more lonely walking down a crowded street in NYC than it does hiking in the middle of nowhere. Strange how that works!

Perfect example of why you shouldn’t talk to or look at anyone in NYC.

See what I mean? Nice that your honest, it’s just not useful whatsoever. But you do you.

No hard feelings, I am really in need of this quick break/vacation so I have a bit of a low tolerance for bullshit right now. Didn’t mean to come across as an asshole either ;).
