Kinja'd!!!

My S4 broke today. I need a new phone and I call on phone knowers here to help if they can. I believe in you.

What I need:

Android

Rugged (less prone to damage than average at least. Waterproof a bonus)

replaceable battery (I swap as needed. In remote places my phone is my lifeline for maps.)

Micro SD slot

Internal 32 GB

Used (not more than $275)

Must be able to shitpost with

anything spring to mind?

EDIT: On Verizon

I don’t into the apple system.

Probably good to clarify if you’re rolling GSM or CDMA. Would narrow down options somewhat.

My last 3 phones were iPhones. I now have a iPhone6

And iPad 4.

My iPad will be due to be changed soon.

Yep. Which narrows it down a LOT, as a lot of the random oddball Droid phones out there are GSM. I’m in a very similar situation with needing a new phone myself.

One of my possibles was a Kyocera Brigadier, but it’s not completely without issues and would require some casual haxxoring to use on US Cellular.

Waterproof is a bonus, but that seems hard to achive if you want user-swappable(as in, no tools) needed. The Moto G 3rd gen could be a look, it’s waterproof to the normal 1.5m/90minutes that others boast about, and less than 200$ NEW.

As for battery, maybe carry a battery bank instead?

also an option. I like the swappable batteries thing because I tend to wear out batteries faster than phones.

FYI, those “car phones” can still be activated (by verizon)! A friend has a Lincoln Mark VIII, with an active car phone. Or at least he did the last time I saw the car a few years ago.

Edit: The number is disconnected and a few years ago might have been like 10...

Old, cheap, fits criteria, and works.

Note 4.

Maybe not my favorite phone I’ve ever had (I miss physical keyboards), but by far the best. Other advantage of note 4 over 5 or newer (other than SD slot) is the fact that you can replace the battery, which Ive had to do twice in 2 and a half years. I let my phone die probably twice a day on average though.

Yeah after 2 years tops, they’re done for. What i like about this one is how cheap it is compared to say, getting a flagship or higher model phone. Sure you miss out on some fanciere stuff, but it does most stuff fine anyway if you ask me.

Big phone though, right?

The truth is that I don’t use or care about the fancier stuff I have on my S4

That’s a tough one if you want to just plug and play. My thoughts;

Nexus 6 128gb.

Pro’s:

Vanilla Android so less bloat and easy to use.

Big battery for extended life. (Mine would last full day shitposting and streaming music)

Will work on CDMA and GSM networks with it’s LTE/4G quad band antenna.

With it’s size and internal storage you don’t need an sd card or tablet.

Con’s

Non removable battery but you can invest in a battery pack

They’re around $300 these days.

Definitely the galaxy s5. That phone fits all the requirements and its extremely affordable as well as batteries can be swapped easily. Otter-box cases are like 20 bucks so you’ll be set with the phone staying in good shape. My dad has had one since 2014 with an Otterbox and the battery and the phone are still in great shape!

I always get the Galaxy Active. It’s water and somewhat shock resistant. I then put a unicorn beetle case on it. With my job I might be outside and up off the ground so I get as tough as I can. You can swas batteries etc... has slot as far as I know.

I’m approaching 2.5 years with my Note 4, still planning on keeping it for a while longer.

It’s still plenty powerful to run games and stuff, still has a great screen and a pretty good camera (sucks in low light though), and decently tough. I’ve always had a case on mine, but the screen shows only one small scratch on it.

I know they are getting a lot of shit right now, but those samsung galaxy phones are just better than everything else ( including especially apple)

Here is everything that is Verizon compatible with a replaceable battery and at least 32 GB RAM, not necessarily including “rugged”:

LG G3
LG G4
LG G5
LG K20 V
LG V10
LG V20
Moto Z Droid
Samsung Galaxy S4
Samsung Galaxy S5
Samsung Galaxy Note 3
Samsung Galaxy Note 4
Samsung Galaxy Note Edge

LG is doing good things with swappable batteries in their current line (G5 & V20) but durability isn’t great. Large glass screens = heartbreak. (Ask me how I know) Though I haven’t managed to shatter it since adding a simple case.

That said, I really like my G5. The battery swap makes me feel like a magician and the dual rear camera are surprisingly handy.

The G6 is going to be water resistant but, alas, non removable battery. You might look into a battery case?

I also <3 the Cat S60, but they’ve said on their facebook they do not plan on making a Verizon version. Dicks.

There are some great mid-range phones out right now. I’m trying to decide between the Moto G5 Plus ($240 at 2GB RAM/32 or $299 at 4GB RAM/64) and the Honor 8 (was previously $400 but best buy reduced to $299 after the Moto was released). Seem like stellar performers with very good functionality…and a warranty. Also stock android on the Moto. No swappable battery though. Carry a battery pack?

Agreed. I have a case for mine but rarely use it anymore and my phone is in as good of shape as my GFs year old note 5.

Has Verizon started offering the 7s (or maybe refurb 7s?) cheap yet since they are selling 8s now? They are nice - better than my 6 and have the sd slot. Plus tons of rugged cases for them.

I will just say this. Apple went to the mat with the FBI to keep a criminal’s phone locked.
