Honestly, how many of you would do this to a yard behind the house YOU DON’T OWN BUT PAY RENT FOR?

Kinja'd!!!

Not to mention using the kitchen to rebuild Jeep engines and transmissions.

I’m shocked that the landlord is OK with this. They must be charging an ASS LOAD for rent beyond what the property is worth.

The kitchen thing would be ok IF everything was fully covered so it didn’t get ruined by oil, etc. Any LL I’ve ever had would have kicked me out if I made the backyard look like that.

Having said that, he’s lucky to have landlords and neighbors like them. Lucky enough that I have a better chance of being attacked by a landshark and being struck by lightning at the same time.

I had a landlord in college who a) didn’t know how many of us were living in the house, b) didn’t care that we built a wall to add a room for one of the extra roommates, c) didn’t seem to care that we broke multiple windows and didn’t really fix them, put holes in the walls to run wires or to allow pool cues to pass from one room to another as needed, no to mention throwing parties with live music and hundreds of people... yeah some landlords do not care at all.

Granted, most do. This was a fun place to live in college though.

Mudding/crawling has never really been my thing, so it’s a little too easy for me to say that I wouldn’t. I just don’t have that temptation.

Not really a fair way to answer that, I know. I suppose that if I really really wanted to, I’d probably review my contract real quick, and if it’s not clear, check with the landlord first.

But as for other neighbor’s opinions? Screw ’em. Well, not really. I mean, can appreciate the whole noise issue, so I’m not going to go on revving around in the wee hours of the night. And if they have a baby or work the night shift, I’ll make an extra effort to be strategic about trying to avoid waking them during the day. But I really don’t care if they don’t like peeking over the fence to see muddy ruts.

Kinja'd!!! "RallyWrench" (rndlitebmw)
04/19/2017 at 12:54, STARS: 1

Yeah, I sure as hell wouldn’t. I seriously don’t understand the decision making process. I rented a lot before buying, and was always fastidious about taking care of the place, always getting the full deposit back and leaving on good terms. I get having project cars and wrenching in the driveway, as my landlords did, but damaging the property is a line in the sand. My neighbor rents, and he’s planted his entire backyard and half the front with fucking bamboo, cutting down other trees to do so. Fence to fence, front to back, bamboo in the ground. Which is now on the other side of his neighbor’s fences, all of whom own their homes. He is not popular, and the property management company for his house is a bunch of shitbags.

In fairness to David, he said it started innocently enough as just a means to turn around for his weird driveway and escalated sort of by accident, and that he plans to level and reseed it “in due time,” whatever that means. His landlords sound super cool, regardless.

My wife and I have talked about renting our place out because it’d make decent money over the mortgage. But we don’t want the house we’ve worked hard for to get wrecked by some douchebags, because while we’re lucky to own, we can’t exactly afford to make major repairs that could be inflicted by bad renters, who only stand to lose a security deposit or might attempt to mask their fuckery with bad repairs.

I know the stuff David does in his rental is unique to gearheads, but it doesn’t surprise me, most renters treat their house like absolute shit and don’t care. Granted I don’t think anything David does is out a malice, and he would probably do it if he owned the house, but it’s par for the course for renters.

I certainly wouldn’t, but if he’s going to fix it and the landlords don’t care, then I won’t judge it. A lot of tenants do a lot worst, AND then they don’t pay the rent. DT obviously pays his rent.

In one of the articles he mentioned that he lives on a very busy road, which to me tells me that: it’s hard to find a tenant there, they have one who pays his rent reliably, it explains why people need to turn around to leave the driveway, and this being a small house on a very busy Detroit area road, I’m betting the landlords don’t have a big investment here.
