I feel like you can do a lot better than a Mk4 VW for that, even when talking about FWD.

If I wanted a cheap FWD track car... Mk1 Focus ZX3, any of them with a DOHC engine (so the Zetec 2.0, the PZEV Duratec 2.3, or the Duratec 2.0). Dirt cheap to buy, dirt cheap to fix, and with a very competent suspension design.

Agreed. Having owned an SVT Focus for 10 years, that chassis can handle very well.

I concur on the Zetec Focus cars. They are for all intents and purposes a better engineered 1st gen 16v GTI with a better rear suspension.

Acura Integra. You can get them for cheap with a manual and they’re pretty solid handling cars from what I’ve heard.
