The Dodge Viper ACR set the benchmark. The New Ford GT is set to break it. Just what can this C7 ZR1 do, though?

The only question left, really, is whether or not this car can keep up and get ahead.

Thats actually the new Corvette, not a new Challenger. Common mistake.

I am very excited though!

Well, first of all, if you don’t need a diffuser, you don’t want a diffuser. The car probably has great underbody aero, and the various cooling ducts probably straighten the air out sufficiently that the wake isn’t a problem. Also, that wing.

Also, CORVETTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s a new challenger , not The New Challenger. There’s a distinction.

It’s a fighting game reference.

Coming from you, it checks out.

I guess I was just used to seeing diffusers on the major supercars this car will get tiered in to, and expected things, forgetting that the 991 GT3RS doesn’t have any diffuser.

I don’t disagree with your assessment at all, but you have to take an underbody diffuser at face value first. On pure racecars (C7.R, for instance) you might need it to meet regulations, or you’re allowed to have it, but not something else, like cooling/aero ducts, etc. so you put the diffuser on there to make up for lacking something else. On a lot of road cars, they’re tacked on because they look cool. Most Lambo’s, for instance, certainly don’t have enough wake or rear lift issues to require them. And my stupid, ridiculous, I love it Abarth has a diffusor and absolutely doesn’t need one. I’d trust those mad geniuses at Corvette Engineering (and likely Pratt & Miller at this point) that something else is making up for it. Most likely that ridiculously awesome wing!

Looks like a Lotus got rear ended by a Corvette.

It’s a face-swap.

That’s not a Challenger...

When I was doing Formula SAE, we had a couple brilliant kids running our aero and what I learned from them is this:

A properly sized and layed-out diffuser is amazing. It gives you the best lift:drag ratio of basically any aero aid. But, and this is a big but, you have to do it right, and that really boils down to packaging issues. If your diffuser is too small it doesn’t do much, and if it’s too shallow it can actually hurt you. Back to your original statement I’d agree that it would probably be hard to layout on a Corvette and make it effective and still meet the requirements for a street vehicle (ground clearance, etc.)

Is this sound logic or am I way off base here?

You’re right on track! The most important rule of aerodynamics and the various parts you can use I learned from my time doing such things was this “If you need it, you need it. If you don’t, it’s just added weight.”

Take a look at the diffusers on the C7.R and you’ll see a flat plate, or a ribbed diffuser that sticks out a good 10 cm out the back of the car. Can’t do that on a road car, so they’re likely making up for it elsewhere.

Will it be a T-top?

Also, I wonder whether the Ford GT will take down the ACR. I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion.

1. Kind of? From the coloration of the roof it should be.

2. Put it this way: both of them are pretty much homologation specials. The design philosophies are different, but we wouldn’t know for sure as to which one works best—the race cars never met at IMSA, which would have been a preview of what was to come.

The Viper ACR’s weakness is top speed: only 179mph to the Ford’s 216. If it turns out that the GT has an equally short braking distance and grip ceiling as the ACR, then snek is ded.

It will definitely be interesting to see. I see the Ford GT as more of a 488 and 650s or 675LT competitor, all of which are much slower than an ACR around most tracks. I could be completely wrong as I have only read one initial review of the street car.
