Get job handed off to me by someone who didn’t want it. Quote job. Custom everything. High costs of material and labor. Confirm pricing with boss. Send bid. Customer says bid is double. Forwards email. Guy who didn’t want it gave preliminary pricing but didn’t give that information. Boss mad at coworker. Coworker mad at me. Customer mad at me. We look like we don’t know what we’re doing. Impossible to match quote from previous pricing. I did everything by the book and this is what happened.

This is why I hate touching other people’s work. Even if it’s given away or transferred, always missing information. Could be an email, phone conversation, who knows. Not me. Not if you don’t tell me.

If I was the customer I’d be pissed too. I never give WAG estimates it’s just a recipe for disaster.

Time for boss to step in and appease the customer and then give coworker a reality check.

Someone needs their bathtub pissed in.

Trick question. No Tercel owner can afford 8 light bulbs.

I work in a completely different industry and the lesson’s the same. Don’t pick up somebody else’s incomplete work. They didn’t finish it for a reason.

Yeah, I love getting this call from the customer: “Your competitor screwed up our project, can you come in and fix it?”

Big no or big $$$

Though in my experience, big no is best.

It never results in big money. In the past I’ve taken those jobs in the hopes of winning over that customer on future jobs. I’ve learned in the 11 years running my business that customers have short memories, and always come back to who’s the cheapest...even if it costs them more in the long run.

I’m dealing with this exact situation right now with the re-building of our local waste water treatment plant. Competitor provided all the materials and walked away when the application required any engineering work. I work in structural composites, and there are really nasty chemicals involved. Not an application where you want a mistake. But I doubt the project managers will learn a lesson. They’re extremely overworked nowadays, and it’s just easier for them to get in a rut.
