What say you, Oppo? Is this the beginning of the end for Force India? Will Mallya get extradited for trial or will England just let him stay?

The only thing is officially guilty of as of now is several years of awful haircuts.

Hadn’t he pretty much distanced himself from the day-to-day operation of the team? Does he even have much of a stake in it any more?

I texted this to my buddy and said “I swear, being a crook is a requirement for racing team ownership.”

because he no longer had a valid passport, he’s still the majority shareholder.

Even if he was taken out of the picture I think a team doing so well with an established factory would find a new owner quickly.

Sahara could buy out the rest of his shares if they feel the situation is becoming a problem. But I don’t think he’ll willingly sell at this point. If he’s found guilty, the court may order him to sell his stake.

The team will have a decent amount of F1 prize money coming their way over the next few years (assuming they finish 6th or higher this year and next), so that would be incentive for someone to buy now. The team infrastructure is there and they are doing well, so not much would have to change as far as day to day stuff goes.

But people/investors have done stupider things, like swooping in a shit-canning everyone, replacing people who know what they are doing with people who don’t.

Yeah they should obviously let them get on with what they are doing, they seem to be heading in the right direction.

I’m not super familiar with the case but an important point brought up when he disappeared last year was him seeming to thumb his nose at the Indian gov. I think many took it as an insult him jetting out and second it becomes a big issue in a county fighting rampant corruption that a billionaire just got away. I don’t think the Indian gov is going to walk away.

No, India is pissed at him. He can say that he wanted to be closer to his children or whatnot, but it’s a load of crap. He knew the banks were closing in. He left just in time. If he could prove that he was innocent, he most certainly has the resources to hire an army of lawyers to bring that evidence to court to clear his name.

He owes something like $800 milli.

Not much can happen right now that involves him getting that $800 milli and paying it back.

all in, with bank loans, taxes, unpaid salaries, and a handful of other unpaid bills, he’s in the hole for $1.35 billion.

he got $2 billion from the sale of his liquor company, most of the proceeds of said sale were to go to pay off the $1.35 billion, but they didn’t.

and that’s where the fraud charges stem from. he had the chance to make it (mostly) right, but took the money.
