Kinja'd!!!

75 years ago today, they launched 16 stripped down Army B-25 bombers off of the USS Hornet to attack the Japanese mainland for the first time. Col. Richard E. Cole is the last surviving Raider.

A couple years ago the last few surviving Raiders held their last “goblet ceremony” at the NMUASF and they live streamed it. I volunteered there at the time but did not go in person. Kicking myself for not attending. Even with the government-quality video feed, my office at home was suddenly very dusty.

I remember reading 30 seconds over Tokyo as a little kid. Still one of my favorite books.

Hey, you’re stealing my thunder! (jk) This gets a write up in todays TDIAH post. Today is also the anniversary of the shooting down (or assassination, if you prefer) of Admiral Yamamoto. That’s a terrific photo. I hadn’t seen that one before.

For those who haven’t seen these photos before, note the lines painted on the deck. Those are guidelines for the landing gear so the bombers’ wing wouldn’t hit the carrier island.

Do I recall correctly that Doolittle took off and forgot to put his flaps down. As such he almost had the shortest flight of the mission?.....
