Since emissions tests are not required on 25-year-old cars, could you hypothetically register and use one of the affected TDIs in 2041 or so if you hadn’t taken advantage of the buyback? I can’t imagine a real reason to save one for that long without being able to drive it, but it would just be interesting to have possibly the only surviving example in the future.

Might be state specific? My 31yo Toyota still needs to pass emissions here.

it would be easier to get a car that already meets the emissions exemption, and do an engine/driveline swap.

and end up with a 1992 vw diesel toyota pickup truck. youll need some adapter plate, and to swap out the computer, and the fuel system, and maybe a sensor or two....

As someone who resides in a place where there are no annual tests of any kind.

sure, why not?

unless they bring in legislation to make it compulsory to get it repaired before eligible to have rego renewed.

Say a car was made and was said to be fine, but then people found out it spat out nuclear waste and dead puppies. You could continue to drive it, but real question is WHY?

It’s bad enough VW is getting fined billions of dollars, why do you want to jump on the band wagon and risk having issues?

That will greatly depend on the area.

Some states don’t have any emissions tests, some states only have emissions tests in certain counties, some states allow 20 or 25 year old cars to be exempt, some states exempt all diesels, some states allow MY1975 or older gasoline and MY1997 or older diesels to be exempt (California).

Also note that some states - even in areas without emissions testing or where the vehicle is exempt - are going to mandate that the recall be performed (which means buyback or fix) before registration is allowed.

That’s the import law. Emissions are a state-by-state thing. Some have no emissions tests, some test up to something ridiculous, like 50 years.
