Consider this horribly drawn road diagram...

Kinja'd!!!

Basically the 3 coloured arrows are my usual route home to get to the blue dot, where my apartment entrance is. For some very odd reason, they put a divider right outside the entrance blocking everything, so the only way to get in is coming from the opposite direction, hence I need to somehow make a U-Turn, then turn right in.

Usually I would get home by following the red route right where the divider ends, but very recently they put a friggin No U-Turn sign right there. So my question is, is the yellow route now also an illegal move, for me to do the U-turn at the stop sign (note: stop sign is actually further away than in this drawing), and I have to take the green route?

And I have no idea why they made it a 4-way stop instead of a roundabout...

is the red an actual u-turn or a left turn?

Both red and yellow are U-Turn then right-turn. Green is turn left to side road, make a U-turn, turn right back on the road where the entrance is.

Drawing not to scale...

If the scale of your drawing is correct, the red arrow looks to be a simple left turn, not a u-turn. A u- turn would imply you are reentering the opposite side of the road to travel in that direction, not leave the road by simply crossing the road. But to be safe, you’d need to go across the 4 way and I turn, then come back through the 4 way and turn right into your street. Damn metric system! Oh wait, never mind.

No it’s not to scale. The entrance is actually completely covered and further down from the end of the median, so it is a U-turn then quick right.

Going forward through 4-way is actually WAY further, since there’s another really long median. So I guess in that case the green route is the only viable option...

Is the divider just a narrow lane divider, or is it a full-size median with occasional turn-arounds?

Basically a full curb. The other ends in another stop sign with no No U-Turn sign. I’ve made U-Turns there in front of a cop and was A-OK.

What a pain. And I thought Michigan lefts were bad. Problem with roundabouts is they take up a lot of real estate, and can’t be setup by merely erecting a few signs. Those intersections grow sometimes two to three times as big when they get changed over to roundabouts.

Good luck. Reminds me of a spot in Toronto by ash bridges bay. If i missed the turn, then I had to go down another half mile to get another shot at a u turn or intersection. Pain in the ass.

Whether or not the yellow route is legal, it seems riskier because it exposes you more to the judgement and actions of your fellow drivers in the intersection. Go green. Better in the long run.

It’s a new area, like 3-4 years old, so I’m not sure why they didn’t just go with that design in the first place. Quite nearby there’s a road with less traffic in a similar design, they just went with it.

Unless the road is completely vacant, green is the only way I do it.

Yeah I guess. That road does get a bit busy sometimes. And this is Toronto, so other drivers are quite unpredictable.

Well even if it’s completely vacant, I’m still not entirely sure about yellow (that’s why I posted this). Those intersections are quite police trap prevalent.

Anything to minimize the interaction with the police force gets my seal of approval.

Let the building management know and call 311 to tell the city about it. That way there’s some record of your complaint at least.

And when nothing happens in 6 months, go rent a jackhammer.

I think it was actually designed that way by the developer. There’s supposedly a new road (blank area to the right of stop sign) where we’re supposed to use instead, make a left then right.

I can understand why they put up the No U-turn sign, there is quite a bit of traffic picking up.

Except that said road won’t exist for another few years, so there’s no real direct route. New area pains I guess, I’ll still bring it up at the next meeting.

So I’ve reviewed all three options and after careful consideration, and significant research I have come to this conclusion :

Move.

People on my street frequently do this magenta route:

Kinja'd!!!

I really wouldn’t recommend it though.

In any event, it looks to me like the no uturn really should be after the cut (prohibiting the yellow, but not the red), but good luck getting them to move the sign. Maybe you have a local councilman or something who could get it done.

I think the best option would be, adjust your route so you come from the road you make the U turn on the green route.

2 rights is easier than a left> U-turn> right> right.

That would be a guaranteed ticket. Where that route starts is a well-known stop sign trap.

Initially when I moved in I’ve seen people do that.

This is somewhat similar to my mom’s place in Toronto. Usually I would just come around from another way so I don’t need to make an awkward turn, like turning left from the stop sign to make it easier. I doubt you’d be able to U-Turn legally at or even past the stop sign.
