Suppose you had to drive across your country (or continent, depending on the size), several thousand kilometres. What would you pick for the drive?

Personally, I think a 911 Carrera 4 GTS (whoever names 911 models should be thrown into a river) would be a lot of fun. AWD, manual, good amount of power, and composed. For mostly highway driving, some back roads, and the chance of snow, I think it would be the best bet for me. Now if only they weren’t so expensive.

Nice, I was going to say Panamera. If it included the possibility of needing help or blending in with the locals, I ’ d have to go more low - key. Plus you ’ d need something that could do it all, including light offroading. I keep coming back to the Lexus GX (applies to: US, Canada). For Mexico and Central America, even more low - key...probably F - 150 or 4Runner. Anywhere else, I ’ d go with the fastest and most off - road capable vehicle known to man: The Rental Car.

20.9-gallon tank, 25+ mpg on the highway and a place to sleep if the hotel is shady.

Also, the more upright captain chair is a comfort that is welcomed after a ton of miles, as well as the vehicle being a little higher so you’re out of the spray in the rain.

Basically, there are people who know the first-gen Sienna were the epitome of the road-trip cars and those who have never driven one.

Also, automotive-stealth, speed away.

Not a bad choice at all.

Needing help would be a big issue with a Porsche. Blending in... eh, not the biggest concern, depending on where you stop for the night.

The comparable gen of Odyssey is the one with transmission issues, but either would be fine. In my experience the Sienna is a little smaller and therefore a little more car-like, but it’s personal preference at that point.

Furthest I have gone in one was 11 hours, but still.

As to the automotive stealth, I was doing 85 in a 55 in the right lane passing a Dodge Durango (who was camped in the left doing 65-ish) when an officer hit us both with POP. My detector went off and I was able to grab the brakes enough where the Durango caught up. He was pulled over, I was not.

I’ve made a couple of long road trips in my 997 C4S, and I’d say it’s pretty damn good at it, as long as the roads aren’t too rough. The seats are fantastic for sitting in all day, but the suspension is still quite stiff. Avoid the rough stuff as much as you can. MPG was pretty decent at 23mpg while cruising at around 75-80mph.

You also get a lot of tire noise. This is pretty much unavoidable, but can be mitigated by using the best tires around for these cars, Michelin Pilot Super Sport (or the upcoming replacement, the Pilot Sport 4S.) Definitely want to get the upgraded sound system.

The 991.2 is softer, less analog, and a bit cushier/more refined than my car, so I’m sure any flavor besides the GT3 is a great cruiser. The 991's are less sports car and more GT.

If I were to get a new car though? That’s an easy one. I’d skip over the 911 and get a Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo.

I just bought a vehicle to cross my country (which I have to do several times a year) in. I wanted comfort above all, safety, and some go, and even on German Autobahns a faster vehicle won’t cover a long distance quicker.

That 911 is nice but I bet it might get old after several hours non-stop behind the wheel.

I’d need something that keeps me interested in driving it, so a big comfy boat/van/suv is not something I’d do. I think I’d go for a proper GT. Maybe a Maser GT or a DB9/DB11. Something luxurious, but also fun and exciting when it’s possible.

My fat pig is still nice on twisty roads, yes it could do better, but it’s a BMW after all. So this 8 series should be quite fun on the stuff we drove at the meet. My guess is that the Brits with the RX 8 and the MG would have a little more fun, but the 8 would always be in their rearview mirror.

(insert eagleboner gif here)

In all seriousness, i think i’d go for a S65 AMG coupe or if i’m bringing friends, a 4 door.

Just effortless mile covering ability, lots of straight line speed, comfort, the works.

the downside is lots of weight which makes those occasional twisties less fun than they could be. Still handles better than most cars on the road though.

Plus, you only have to go like 5K miles, so it probably wouldn’t even break by then.

I live in California. I bought my M5 off of eBay from a seller in Detroit, a few short days from Christmas in an economically challenged part of the country. Driving a 500HP car in the snow isn’t really possible so I flew to Detroit and then headed to my family, in New Jersey, for a visit and to leave the car in a garage with them until spring and ship it back or whatever. Surely not drive it. Surely not.

I forgot how cheap gas is outside of California. So I changed plans, got the satellite radio enabled, and drove from Detroit through the entire wide assed states of Ohio and Pennsylvania and hung out with the fam a few days and decided: fuck it. I went down the Blue Ridge Parkway through the mountains, and just slowly turned west. I listened to great music at a bar in Kansas City after teaching the hotel valets how to operate the SMG E60 transmission (“How do you put it in park?” “Well it’s a manual transmission so...”). I zipped across Texas, had a blast in Arizona and saw a huge hole in the ground and had great BBQ in Santa Fe and still wasn’t done. Once I got home to CA I didn’t want to stop driving the car so I went up the entire state following the coast the whole way. This was the expensive part of the trip as the car has an amazing thirst.

Reflecting on the above, I think I’ve made some good choices in life. I digress.

The GTS you’ll be glad to get out of, and have no room for stuff. Creature comforts suffer.

In the M5 the shocks are filled with a electromechanical magnetic fluid so I can adjust the suspension while driving with a special button.

You also don’t have a very good sound system in the GTS. I don’t mean the stereo. I mean the music created under the hood. While the GTS is truly magical in its exhaust note, it’s not the sublime whine of a V10 at 8500rpm.

Also pretty great drink holders in the BMW.

For most of my life I have traversed the US of A in a 1997 Ford F350 Crew Cab long bed with a 7.3 Powerstroke. It has carried my family all the way from Alaska to Cabo to Maine and all over British Columbia. Now for a family and sometimes 1-3 dogs this was the best cross country vehicle. Could hold all of our stuff, fit all of us in relative comfort, and was damn near bulletproof. Hell, my dad still DDs it.

We were on the interstate in Pennsylvania and an old man turned left in front of us while I was driving. I slammed on the brakes, but still ended up blowing through the truck portion of his DTS like a hot knife through butter. The whole trunk was hanging off the side of his car and the only real issue we had was the steering box jammed and we couldn’t turn left. I got to the side of the interstate and the old man drove off. There is more to the story, but the truck we fully repaired in 3 days and we kept traveling around the eastern seaboard like nothing had happened.

Now saying that, I really want to travel around in a classic car. I don’t fucking care about anything else but the feeling it will give. And if it breaks it breaks, I can fix most things and that is part of the fun. That or drive my ‘06 GTO around too. That would be equally fun.
