Remember how we were all irritated that so far in 2017 the Nissan Rogue is the best selling non-pickup vehicle in the US?

Kinja'd!!!

I wasn’t the first one to point this out , but in 2017, the Nissan Rogue is the #4 best-selling vehicle in America , behind the Ford F-Series, Chevy Silverado, and Ram Pickup. Collectively, our reaction is probably: “HUH?????” and also, “there’s no way that stupid Star Wars tie-in sold that many Rogues.”

Kinja'd!!!

My third reaction was, “you certainly do see a lot of Nissans on rental lots, I wonder if that’s a factor here,” and sure enough, it is. Automotive News interviewed Nissan North America Chairman Jose Munoz about Nissan’s rising fleet sales. The article doesn’t break out specific numbers of Rogues sold to rental fleets, but does talk about how Nissan has been upping its fleet sales volume and is now the #4 fleet seller behind GM, Ford and FCA.

Then again, maybe it was all because of these sweet Rebel Alliance logos in the cup holders.

They feel nice inside and they’re comfortable. The engine is just right for the car.

why is it every car that I see at night with ONLY DRLs on is 7/10 times a Nissan Rogue?

I don’t recall being irritated by this. Nissan’s CUV game is on fleek.

It’s basically the Altima crossover, for all intents and purposes (Yes, the Murano is more purely related to the Altima, but is priced a lot higher). The Altima is the most generic choice of people shopping sedans, in part because I heard NMAC is still doing really aggressive financing, almost like Mitsubishi or Kia 10 years ago. Long story short: It probably won’t last and might be painful for Nissan in the longer run. Look for massive depreciation soon.

The adjective I keep coming back to with the Rogue is “fine.” It is a totally reasonable, acceptable vehicle. But there are so many other totally reasonable, acceptable vehicles, both overall and in the compact CUV class.

The Rogue lacks the brand appeal and reputation for reliability of the CR-V and RAV4 (or the benefit of being all-new this year like the CR-V).

It doesn’t have the premium features at bargain price and extra-long warranty of the Santa Fe.

It doesn’t have the extra turbo horsepower of the Escape or Sportage.

And yet there it is at the top of the sales charts, not just in its segment, but of everything that’s not a full-size pickup truck, which is mildly baffling until you realize that a decent chunk of those numbers are from fleet sales.

Personally, someone buying a Dodge P/U is too concerning. After my mom’s pick up, I can never trust shit they make again.

Quote the person who owns a Durango down the hall from me: “Never buy a Dodge.”

I dunno, I’d rather have a CR-V, Santa Fe, Escape or Sportage before a Rogue. Maybe even a RAV4 even though I think most modern Toyotas are noncompetitive crap trading on their reputation for reliability.

Yes, in addition to pushing fleet sales Nissan is generally offering aggressive incentives.

I’m a former owner of two different Jeep Grand Cherokees. They were each piles of crap in their own ways but I loved the seats in my WJ. They were like the shitty-but-super-comfy “leather” recliner at your grandpa’s house.

I wouldn’t say I was irritated. Perhaps miffed, or maybe irked. Might have only gone so far as irascible.

They’re actually one of the very few modern Nissans that I don’t mind looking at. After seeing how rapidly fairly modern Nissans fall apart, I wouldn’t buy one, but I can understand people looking for a safe/reliable crossover would choose it over lots of the others, just based on looks and Japanese-ness. Most non-car people I know still think as simply as American = crap/unreliable, German = expensive/unreliable, Korean = ??, Japanese = good, safe, cheap, reliable. Interestingly, basically everyone just thinks Volvo = safe.

All that said, I’m surprised it’s outselling the Civic. Maybe it’s different in the states, but up here they’re selling like crazy. It sucks, because I hate looking at them.

I don’t even mind the Rogue as a vehicle, it’s not bad by any means. It just does nothing to stand out in the compact crossover segment when most others at this point offer something unique. Maybe its unique feature is “WE FINANCE ANYONE FOR 80 MONTHS COME ON DOWN SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!”

I’d say those stereotypes are broadly accurate among the general car-buying population although the perception of the Korean brands are now 50/50 between “pile of crap” and “reliable like Japanese but cheaper.”

Holy shit look at the losses to all the car models compared to the massive gains in crossovers. When will this fad end? It’s time for a new trend.

Just outside the top 15 there are at least a couple cars with gains over last year. The #16 Hyundai Elantra and #17 Chevy Cruze are 37.7% and 44.8% higher than last year, respectively. Both of them are recently refreshed, although the Cruze was new for the 2016 model year I seem to remember it took a while for supply to get out there.

True, I guess it is weird that it’s outselling the CRV and RAV4 for sure, I wouldn’t expect that. Honestly it could just be a combination of fleet sales, and people thinking it looks better. The super long financing definitely has to be a big part of it.

Also true, and yeah there are more people starting to see the Koreans as good stuff. Usually younger people from what I see.

Got it confused with the Murano, which is easy to do. In fact, I’m disappointed with myself for knowing about the existance of so many current Nissans.

What’s funny is that this is no longer true. Among Japanese brands, only Lexus is still known for reliability. The Koreans are the new Japanese, while the Americans (Except the Italians - FCA, which I don’t even consider truly American anymore) and Germans have made massive gains and also generally passed the Japanese in quality. Toyota, Honda, and Nissan have slipped horribly. Subaru is being slowly Toyotafied, which is eroding the reason they became popular... Mazda is losing what made them Mazda as Toyota chews on their brain.

I feel bad for people that still think the Japanese make the best cars.

And they’re crazy. My company bought a bunch for their outside sales people to drive because they were the cheapest SUV they could buy. Just looking at my office parking lot, it’s clear that Hyundai and Kia make the best vehicles in this class, followed by Ford and Subaru.

It’s because they’re selling them to fleets, at massive discounts, and with crazy financing. Nissan is a major player in the subprime market like FCA and Mitsubishi.

I do agree the Korean are the new Japanese. Bargain prices for incredible reliability and unique design. But Japanese still make the best cars as long as Lexus is around and they aren’t slipping.
