What do I need to put this back to stock, i.e. put a stock Trans Am wheel back on it?

Kinja'd!!!

The horn wasn’t even connected, so I don’t know what else I’m missing.

Kinja'd!!!

Anyone know if I am going to need just the OEM wheel, or am I going to need the collar and some other bits too?

Kinja'd!!!

Any info or diagrams would be helpful.

That looks like it is missing pieces but I’ve never changed a wheel on an F-body, if it were me I’d go to a self service junkard look for an F-body with a factory wheel and take it off to practice, and see if anything is missing, plus if you break something no loss.

There’s no 81 or older F-bodys in the yards near me.

Hmmm Chiltons should have an Exploded diagram, also since it is GM chances are it was used for many years in more than just F-body’s, search by part numbers. After that I’m out of ideas

I really do need to find a Chilton’s for this car once I start putting it back together...

I don’t think you are missing any pieces. IIRC the wheel just presses onto the splines. It’s been a while since I had my G-body column apart. The good news is that GM used pretty much the same column designed by Saginaw steering from like 1968-2001 in everything from full sized trucks to Corvettes.

My local library has a bunch of Chiltons manuals online, check with yours it’s free you just need a Library Card.

I’ll have to check if they have manuals. I did fix my first Firebird using a Library-sourced Chilton, so I’ve been down that route.

I apologise for being unhelpful, but for a second I thought this was a shitpost and you were calling F-bodies trash cans.

You are going to need some more parts, not just the wheel. I don’t see any of the factory horn cap stuff (spring, spacer, etc).

Stuff should be available repro for $25 or so.

Many (all?) Grant wheels require pulling the stock stuff and using an adapter kit. You can’t mount a stock wheel on Grant adapter.

The adapter being the 5-pronged piece? The three-hole part that it attaches to looks factory, or is that part of the kit too?

The confusing part is the way the OEM wheel also attaches with torx screws like the Grant does:

Would this be all I need then? ^

(Edit: I just noticed the TA wheel has SIX screws, and not FIVE.)

Looks pretty close. It’s not the wheel itself (the six vs five) it’s the hub underneath that does it all.

Maybe this can help you. It’s a diagram of all of the Grant parts used to install:

You’re good. The adapter needed is already attached to your stock steering wheel. See below, the hub attached to your steering wheel bolts on to the lock plate on your column (the thing with three holes). It’s been about 4 years since I’ve had my column apart but I think that’s correct.

Ah, got it. I just need to find a wheel, the collar, and the horn bits to make it all work. Did you ever find your SE wheel? There’s one on eBay right now (at least it LOOKS like its got gold spokes) for relatively cheap.

I’ve got one, but it’s completely trashed so I’m still using my extra brown ‘81 wheel spray painted black. You’re finally finding time to work on the TA though so that’s good to see.

I can go take a look at my car in 30 mins or so and take pictures.

I am also going to reccomend you get an original steering wheel and not a repro, I have heard they are made from cheap metal.

Baby steps.... lol

I’m still gathering parts and saving for the LS but now that its nice out I’m going to finish the patch work on the floors at least.

I’ve got some searches saved on eBay for some nice used ones. Every time I see one at a swap meet they want ridiculous amounts of money because they’re in really REALLY nice condition.

Its a shame that the company that remakes them does such a shitty job and pushes everyone out of the market.

You can always use this oppertunity to put a nardi on it :)

so the button just clips on this pedastal piece. there must be a spring or something under the bottom plate because I cant see what is pushing the horn button back into place.
