Kinja'd!!!

So last weekend, I did a bit of towing. A trailer that weighs about 2000 lbs. And in this trailer, two cubic yards of top soil. A yard of top soils allegedly weighs about 2200 lbs. Maybe a little more since dirt was wet.

2000+2200+2200 = 6400 lbs. My car allegedly can tow 5000 lbs.

I don’t know that I broke something, but it’s acting a bit weird. What could I have possibly broke?

2005 Lexus GX470. Towed it maybe 10 blocks.

HammerHeadFistPunch had a good article on this a while back - look up what your Lexus can tow according to Euro specs. American specs go to more tongue weight, lower absolute load. If your tongue weight stayed sane and the total load was below Euro spec, absolutely nothing should be wrong.

It’s shifting a bit shifty. Wife seems to think it’s normal, but I think the shifting is a bit shiftier...

Following what RamblinRover said, your Lexus (of that model year) can tow 2900kg safely. This is mainly due to the factory hitch being upgraded in the 2004 model year. If your estimates are correct them you were towing 2902kg, hardly enough to constitute an ‘overweight’ load. There’s always a safety margin in the workings out and 2kg will be well within that. Assuming the topsoil was loose and/or it was a balanced load, I can’t see any damage being done. Your rear suspension may feel a little different after being so heavily compressed (was the nose of the car riding high, or the trailer load weight forward of the axles?), otherwise I can’t see there being a problem at all.

Just looked up euro spec towing capacity for this car and it came up with edmunds and it says it should be able to tow 6500 lbs. More information is less information. More confusing.

Guy loaded the topsoil pretty evenly in the trailer. It sure was heavy, but I went slow and nose of the car wasn’t outside of normal.

I was driving on a highway without trailer and it was shifting a bit weird. Almost like kicking. There is a case of a bucking drive shaft in these cars. Needs to be lubed often, but it’s somewhat new. Shouldn’t be kicking again.

You’re very nearly the Oppo topsoil hauling expert, I’d say, so it’s good you weighed in.

Give it a week. Possible that the extra load caused the trans to re-learn itself some bad behavior. Stupid learning crap...

Well, if I had to be an Oppo pro in anything, I don’t mind topsoil hauling. It’s a necessary thing! Everyone will do it once in their life. Why won’t people think of the gardens???!

just to eliminate my imagination, i have dealership looking at it now. If they think it’s ok, i’ll laugh it off to my crazy imagination. If it’s not ok, at least dealership has it now and I save on towing it there.

The infamous “car feels weird” repair order. Did you tell them what you did?

I told them. They drove it around. Told me it was all fine. Read the codes tranny may have thrown. Nothing. They let me go.

You go to a barber and ask if you need a haircut - of course you do.

This dealership is a bit different. They only fix things that are actually broken. It’s a rare place in this day and age.

Of course, conspiracy theorist in me says they unbolted few things so I come back real soon, but nothing on original complaint
