With late June coming up the Alps summer Europpomeet is closing in as well. We’ve create a preliminary route which is still a work in progress. Any suggestions for routes, stops or anything else is welcome. Open to participants as well! Fly in or drive yourself. ( updated April 22th )

Note that these things are still fun with 2 people in 1 car, so if you want to keep costs down it’s something to consider.

Personally I’d focus on the part roughly in the red circle above, as it’s very nice and a lot more cost effective than Switzerland. Western Austria, North Western Slovenia, South Tirol (Italy), maybe a tiny part of Switzerland (avoiding highways (tolls), diner and Swiss Francs) or even Liechtenstein just because. But that’s merely the plan that’s in my head at this moment.

Edit April 19 : After a conversation with Out, but with a ZZW30 I came up with a very preliminary route, with two loops. The loops are roughly 12 hours of non-stop driving each (source: google maps), which is a comfortable length when spread out over 2 or maybe 3 days each. So one could opt for one loop for a weekend or both loops for a weekend plus a few days.

Edit April 22 :

Route updated. The two loops above are out (for now). The route as it is now is shown below. 20 hours non-stop. Do half in 2 days or do it all in 4. Including lots of time for activities/sight seeing. Map is interactive.

Still on mobile, so could you add Kühtai and the Grossglockner? I’ll check your Furkot invitation tomorrow night.

I will, tomorrow.

One little issue with both is the timmeljoch; it’s closed until early June. Not an issue for our trip, but Google maps and furkot know about the closure and create a (huge) detour.

We could create an 8-shaped route, so we can create a short single loop and a long double loop route which people can choose between.

Sounds good! Perhaps we could set up shop around Garmisch or Innsbruck on Friday, and drive loops from there during the weekend? Silvretta and Hahntennjoch are also possible then.

Comfortable/sporty: tendency for sporty, can be comfortable/slow if classy
Sporty classic would be nice

I’ve always been a huge fan of Peugeot 504 convertibles.

On a more realistic note: MX5 is the default choice. Slightly more daring: Alfa Romeo Spider, BMW 3-series (E36?) or Z3, Fiat Barchetta, Ford Mustang (if you can find one), Peugeot 306, Toyota Celica, Honda CRX Del Sol.

Impress the ladies with your wallows; Chrysler Le Baron!

Don’t overlook this gem .

Wildcard: oppomeet veteran (MR2, MG F, MX5). Or 205 CTi! With a bit of luck mine will be done (mechanically, not optically) then.

What could possibly go wrong with a Jaguar like that? You’d be our hero though.

Given your “maximum €300 depreciation” budget, I could suggest the Ford Escort, Fiat Punto and Renault 19 (in that order, due to availability). You can buy those for €300. Abandon it halfway and you still have only €300 depreciation.

Should have bought all the 504s a few years ago. Missed opportunity.
I had the 306, 205 and the CRX, all three were great!
Too many options!
Also, I saw that a 1960 Impala convertible was for sale 2 hours from where I live. I have already seen this car in fact. I was there to buy some trim parts for my Bel Air, but for every interesting part, the response was: no, I want to keep that for the Impala, just in case. It was a real pain in the ass, and 6 wasted hours of my life. I might check that one out.

Did something similar a few years ago. Stelvio and Flüela is wonderful passes, and I would take the Umbrail pass down to Münstertal between them. You could of course also go down to Bormio towards Livigno (maybe visit Gigi Galli) and St. Moritz too.

It would be glorious. Kind of Top Gear challenge-esque too.
To be fair, for some cars, the price difference between Germany and France makes this easier. Once a car is French, it might be worth more. Case in point: My CRX went from 2500 to 4300 with an invest of 700€ and an import.

The French aren’t familiar with import from another EU country? I believe I mentioned before I sold my previous 205 CTi to a pair of French guys of about 70?

I’ll look into that, thanks! Do you have time to come along?

Shhhh, they’ll hear you!
There are several things:
- French people are lazy with languages, so there the first obstacle
- Most are not ready to drive far to get a car
- They still think every car in Germany is rolled back, even if it’s as illegal and easy to do in Germany as in France
Yes you told me that, CTI prices have skyrocketed in France, I might get one soon too. If I find a decent cheap one across the border that is.

Nah, just get yourself to Munich or Innsbruck or something and you can come along. Get a rental or come along with one of the rest of us, as we do have more than drivers seats.

Doubt it. I’ll defend my thesis mid-June and go to a conference in Lyon the last week..

Perfect fit! Finish your thesis, drive/fly to the Alps and drive there for a few days and continue on to Lyon. ;)

Man, I’d love to be there... I’ll try to convince my friend to bring some cars back from Europe around when the trip takes place lol. My Mini would be slow uphill, but downhill, it’s untouchable haha

If you can make it that would be great. We might be able to convince Joep ( if he joins) to take his/your Pao, because who would take a 911 (930) when you’ve got a Pao? Your Mini could take that one on, right?

True, who would take a 911 when you can choose a 1L Nissan Micra from the late 80's with an auto trans?? :)

And my Mini would take on the 911... Downhill lol.
