Talk me out of a NB or NC

The desert killed my dreams of owning a new Miata. To be specific, it choked it out in a freak sandstorm before leaving it to freeze to death.

But I am not a smart man and I still want that open-topped motoring experience in something that’s considerably safer than a motorbike, which is why I’m looking at a NB.

My question is: Is the NB worth buying or should I suck it up and buy the uglier NC? I want something cheap enough where I won’t cry when the sand whips at it.

I have an NB and i love it. Personally i think it looks better than the NC and has more parts available for it. But i am biased

Do you really think a Miata is that much safer than a bike?

Well, it’s got two extra wheels, which helps. When I mean “safer” I mean “safer than jumping dirt bikes” because that’s what my coworkers do for fun.

I understand the laws of physics aren’t on my side, but my commute’s 5-10 miles a day through a sparsely populated desert town. I don’t spend enough time on the roads to get hit.

NB > NC.

NA is a little too old and I want some variation of green/British Racing Green which means I’ll be chasing down a narrower pool of cars.

If you live in the desert, I assume the roads are quite straight? If so, the Miata is going to suck. Get a C4/5 Corvette if you want a convertible. Drop top, with power for straight line fun.

There isn’t too much of a price jump from a good NB to a newer NC. Your best bet is to ‘save’ either one from someone who doesn’t appreciate it or has devalued it with questionable mods or run into what is really an easy fix that they are unable or unwilling to perform.

Save the Miatas!

The owner actually lived.

Your Hard Dog, Hard Core, Double D roll-bar helped save my legs. On January 12, 2003 Mary Ann and I had an accident, we hydroplaned into a tree. I was in the passenger seat and was pinned in for just over an hour.

Here are the pictures and explanations of our accident:

The right wheel is what pushed up the floor board that broke and pinned my left leg. The firemen said front wheel had been pulled out about a foot in this photo. The doors were attached, the firemen cut them off, the left door opened, the right did not. Notice the wet streets in the background.

Notice the mark on the tree and the height of the bumper, evidence that we flew into the tree. The car sort of folded on impact. The right front tire was the point of impact. The left side and rear of the car were barely affected.

After the firemen tried twice to lift the dash (the back of the ram punched through the wall in the ear of the cockpit), I suggested that they push off the roll-bar. This is the final position of the hydraulic ram that lifted the dash, which released my left leg. So you see while we did not roll over, your roll-bar did help get me out of the car.

Thank you for your product.

BTW (because the warranty) we will be getting another Miata, and your roll-bar will be installed soon afterwards.

I’m a NB2 owner but I have to ask, what your plans might be for your Miata ownership? NBs don’t have the best gearing for highways (80 mph at 4k using top gear) and given you’re in a desert, there’s going to be a lot of highway traveling unless you’re near mountains. The NB is lighter, easier to work on, and more affordable than a NC but they’re getting up there in age. The NC is heavier but it’s safer, more comfortable, and better suited for long-distance driving as a touring convertible.

You have two greens to work with on NBs: Emerald Green Mica (metallic) and the ‘01 SE-only British Racing Green (gloss, not metallic).

I had a Emerald hardtop and it was cool for a while because it was black in the shade but it showed its true shades in the light. I eventually got it repainted gloss black and went with a two-tone look.

I’m with him on this, it’s more fun to have a Corvette if you want to enjoy eating up highway miles at a brisk pace.

NB is a better car for the vast majority of owners compared to an NC. Now, plenty of NC owners love theirs, but the fact remains, it is the most bloated of the bunch and most disconnected from the “roadster ethos”.

Get the NB if you want a fantastic drivers car with almost unlimited upgrade potential and ridiculously cheap running costs. Get the NC if you want a bit more comfort, sound deadening, love the styling or just feel more comfortable with a newer car.

Momentum based cars aren’t great cars for cruising.

You actually bring up a good point, but the Corvette is more than I’m willing to spend right now. The Camry will stay as my long-distance car and this is mostly a project/daily for my short commute.

C4 can be had for decent NB money.

I was planning on using it as a runabout for in town/on-base commuting and as a weekend project and use my Camry for long road trips.

Maybe the odd track day as I’m about an hour from Buttonwillow.

Yeah, in that case a Miata should work for your need. I recommend going with a NB if you plan on doing track days. Get one with a hardtop and/or a Hard Dog or Blackbird Fabworx rollbar.

WR250L or CRF250L is all you need. You don’t need to go ‘jumping’ dirt bikes to have fun on one (actually jumping one of the lite enduros on a stock suspension wouldn’t end well anyway). You won’t kill yourself on one but you will have a hell of a good time riding around town and the desert.

Between the NB and NC, I think there is no wrong answer.

The NC has more interior room, has more safety features (e.g. side airbags), and accelerates a bit faster.

The NB will cost less, is a bit lighter, and is probably a bit more chuckable in the corners.

I think the NC is a slightly better daily driver, and the NB is a slightly better “fun car.” But, again, there is no wrong answer here. Just test drive both and see what you prefer.
