I genuinely think the Corolla iM (Formerly Scion iM?) has a lot of potential to make the Toyota lineup slightly exciting. Current reviews show that it has great ride and handling, with pretty much the only real downside being the extremely anemic 1.8L NA motor.

It comes standard with a ton of equipment for about $18,000 with pretty much all the visible exterior equipment shown in the picture. It also has double wishbone rear suspension and is apparently much nicer to drive than the sedan. The interior is pretty boring but hey look, a 6 speed stick:

All Toyota has to do is drop in a potent and efficient turbo 4, like maybe the Lexus 2.0L twin scroll turbo putting out 240hp and 260tq???? Im not going to say it could be a GTI killer but it could be a damn good competitor at a low price and would also match up well with the focus ST and new Civic hatch.

it’s too early to say but they could already have a gti killer http://www.evo.co.uk/toyota/yaris/18599/toyota-yaris-grmn-supercharged-hot-hatch-to-rival-fiesta-st

I’m slightly surprised that this has the claimed good points. I knew one of the small cars they sell is a rebadged/styled Mazda, which is what I thought this was.

Maybe it gains from the fact it wasn’t originally intended for the US market (much like some other cars have over the years).

I often drive my father’s hybrid Auris and I can totally assure you that there’s nothing interesting, fun, enthusiastic or exciting in any way about it. All it does is pretty much stay together and use very little petrol.

I mean if they already have the engine I certainly can’t see why they wouldn’t. What I don’t know is if the 2.0 from Lexus is longitudinal or not.

Considering the iM has the 2ZR-FAE, the NX is on the same platform as the iM, and the Russian-market NX is available with the 3ZR-FAE, I don’t see why the 8AR-FTS wouldn’t fit in the iM.

I do really like the looks, if it had the go to back it up I’d be considering it.

I looked it up and realized that.

What we could use is a new Corolla/Matrix XRS.

Make it fit Toyota ... just do it!

Yeah it is actually just better in every way than the sedan variant, and apparently has the chassis to handle more power.

Exactly what I was thinking. Toyota was late to the 2.0L turbo game but theirs just may be the best. Just like the 2gr was late to the 3.5 v6 game but is a reliable workhorse. I would totally consider one of these with the NX motor at like $23-25k considering all the standard equipment

That concept on the iM platform would be really cool if it were cheap.

I don’t get enthusiasm about this appliance in the US. It’s a car you buy with your head while your heart is switched off. Those vehicles need to exist too but aren’t typically received positively on an enthusiast website. If you want a nice driving car in this class, get a Mazda 3. Or a Focus for all I care. Not this Auris/iM. In the Euro market I’d prefer almost everything in the segment over this Toyota. In the US it might be more difficult to find something decent in the segment, but still. As an enthusiast not the Corolla, never the Corolla.

They could have at least take the tC engine (which is/was the 4-banger camry engine) and given us that option... 180HP.

BUT THEY DIDN’T

Also what irks mah tater is that this car has an effectively engine identical in both displacement and in power as my wife’s rebadged Corolla hatchback (the 1ZZ-FE), and I think that engine was designed almost 15 years ago. The one in the iM only gets marginally better fuel economy. The iM would be an acceptable vehicle for someone like me who owns slow cars, but has no mass appeal.

Personally, I’d rather they take the 2.0 L from the 86 and let it rev out the fun. I think the iM looks great and I sat in one at an autoshow, the interior is not a bad place to be.

It’s pretty much a set of mounts and a bellhousing away from fitting.
