Kinja'd!!!

I’m not on twitter begging for free loot boxes like everyone else, but I am bummed that Overwatch servers are down on Easter. I appreciate Blizz trying to get the servers back up ASAP, and those guys working on Easter are TRUE AMERICAN HEROES.

Anyone else play on PC? They did shut down PS and XBOX servers too so feel free to grip if you play console too.

UPDATE: LOOKS LIKE IT’S BACK UP!!

Kinja'd!!!

Anyone have experience owning and fixing an old beetle? I want to get a cheap one this summer and fix it up. I’m thinking 60's / early 70's. I really want to try rebuilding an engine. I think a relatively light air-cooled beetle engine that is only held in with a few bolts would be a nice place to start getting my hands dirty. And parts are cheap enough that I wouldn’t be heartbroken if I really screwed things up. Share your experiences if you have any please!

I’m a bit bummed that battle.net is down, too. I really like the new PvE event, too.

I fixed an old beetle at the side of the road in Mexico. I hate them. Get a Ghia.

I play a couple of matches a week on PC. Have to limit myself to keep from playing constantly.

I used to own a 72 Super Beetle. They are good cars to learn how to work on to other vehicles. Sort of a gateway drug. lol

I have owned three. 76 Super, 73 standard, 67 standard. I really wouldn’t mind a mid engine Cayman drive train in a Beetle, if you are looking for gift ideas. I was bummed about battle.net, but it looks like it’s up again.

For advice make sure to get a copy of “How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive”. It’s been in publication forever and any edition will do. It has a very good section on what to look for when you buy a Beetle. Thesamba.com is also a valuable resource along with aircooled.net.

If you can work on a lawnmower, you can work on a beetle.

This is sort of the reason why I want to import a FIAT 126p - beside the fact I really like them, of course.

But, a 2-cylinder rear-mounted air-cooled ending held in by just a few bolts should be a pretty fun car to learn on as well! I already bought the Haynes Manual and have several other repairs manuals in digital form in various languages! :D

I owned a 73 super beetle. Super easy, super cheap cars to own, and actually fun to work on.

I’m working on buying another myself, after I restore and sell my one-owner supercharged 95 Civic EX that I’ve had most my adult life now. Any trades out there? :-)

I’m no purist - I’m researching a Subaru flat-4 swap and air suspension for my next cal-look bug, personally.

But even if you go wild - pick up whatever the latest edition is of “how to keep your Volkswagen alive” by John Muir. It’s not only a classic, it’s the VW Bible to the air cooled enthusiast. The information is tribal and priceless. You can fix just about anything on the car with a 13 mm wrench, flathead screwdriver, and that book. It’ll even cover your engine rebuild. You’ll love the removal instructions - “Lower the engine to the ground. Now, your and three of your friends can lift the rear of the car and walk it over the engine.”

Trust me - buy it even before you pick up your VW. I still look through mine occasionally.

Good luck and have fun! That’s what it’s about.

I have a 72 that I’m working on now, and it’s definitely a good learning experience. Extremely simple and fun to play around with, plus there’s loads of parts available!

If you mean a Karmann Ghia, I’d love to own one. Those are a bit tougher to find for $2000, though..

I saw a lady driving a 2CV down the street today. I really want one now, but I doubt I’d even fit in it!

Which year do you like best? I’m thinking I should save up and maybe hold out for a Super, but I really want to just jump in head first with the cheapest rustbucket I can get then just have fun with it.

You’d be surprised how much space there is in them! How tall are you?

6'1, all torso. I’m good in small convertibles like my Miata because I have unlimited legroom and my legs are short for my height, but low ceilings kill me.

But to think of it, it was France’s Beetle, so they must have figured that goons my size would end up with one.. I would be a blast to putt around in a 2CV, I’d be part of the air-cooled club too!

I much prefer a standard over a super. I think 67 is the year to get if given choices. Supers have limited parts for the front ends, and might have fuel injection(bad). Here is a handy guide for the year differences.

Yay for air-cooled! Plus, you can always just flip back the roof on a 2CV if you get one of those models and let your head stick out :P
