Kinja'd!!!

I got business class going back from PVG (Shanghai) to LAX (Los Angeles) tomorrow all because F86sabre’s pictures made it looked so comfortable and I want to sleep laying down, plus have lounge access. I’ll make a detailed post when I’m on the plane, which is a 787-8 and sadly not a 747 double decker like his, but it should be enjoyable since it’s a new aircraft! Only thing I don’t like about the 787 is that it doesn’t get dark; the dimmable windows are neat, but don’t completely block the sun, which we’re flying into on the way to LA..

Flight is a modern miracle. With that said, there’s no bloody way I’m ever getting in an airplane.

Plane crashes. TSA agents that grab your balls. Tickets that might actually turn out to be vapor because overbooking is apparently SOP. Hired goons that will fuck your shit up if you decide you don’t want to give up the seat you paid for, the seat the airline can at any time arbitrarily decide you don’t get to have if it wants to.

Add to that the reality of being in a tin can with other terrible humans for hours at a time and...pass. Hard pass. I’ll likely go to my grave never having experienced flight.

you can avoid like 90% of that if you avoid US or border crossings. (also, you REALLY think thats a common enough thing?)

as for plane crashs, the odd of being in a plane crash are 1 in 11 MILLION. its probably the safest way to get around on the planet right now. (for comparison, the odds of being in a car crash are 1 in 5000)

I can’t avoid crossing the US border. I live there. Yep, plane crashes are unlikely, but ‘unlikely’ isn’t good enough for me. 1 out of infinity is still better than 1 out of 11M.

Thanks to a pilot of a father, I used to spend most of my long haul flight either in business or 1st... This is NICE. When you have lots of things to do as soon as you land but also have to deal with jetlag, a good confortable flight makes it much, much easier to deal with...

You do realize you have more chance to die every single time you take your car right? Or more chance to die when you cross the road for that matter... and I have never been gropped by TSA in spite of not being american and travelling there very often. They are annoying fucks who think very highly of themselves, sure, but other than that...

I’m sure you realize that there’s a much higher chance of dying in a car crash than in a plane crash. But I understand the feeling that in a plane you are not in control.

It will be so worth it. Flying coach from China to the US or Vice Versa is a miserable experience.

Can’t argue with the most of those things!

The TSA isn’t that hard to deal with if you arrive nice and really early. My ID looks like an entirely different person than me and I carry on more phones than any passenger should even think about flying with, but I got through without issue all three times I’ve flown so far. :)

And as for crashes, airliner safety has hit its stride. Gone are the days planes break apart because a poor hatch design (DC-10), or because an uncontained engine failure took out the hydraulics (also the DC-10), or because pilots are seemingly too incompetent to fly their plane (a few early A320 crashes).

Nowadays, the majority of your crashes come from small airlines from small countries...Stuff like letting their kid into the cockpit, or poor maintenance. Every once in a while you will get an Air France 447 or a Malaysian Airlines 370 though...

Yeah. Did coach already on lax to pvg and lax to tlv. Long ass flights.

If you die in a car crash, it might be instant. Like a tractor trailer’s brakes went out as it approaches the stoplight at maximum speed and the impact cracks all your ribs and bursts your aorta. You’re in maximum pain for a few moments before you internally bleed out. That doesn’t sound so bad.

Compare that to having the airplane rip in half at 20k feet and your first visage at the end of your life is watching gravity yank a family of three out of the opening. Or maybe you’re the one falling for a full minute in a half at terminal velocity.

But that’s rare for the plane to crack open like the aluminum 400MPH egg that it is, right? How about the plane goes down over the ocean and you and all the other couple hundred people just drown. You’re not gonna get that door open and nobody’s getting out alive. You just drown. Holding your breath as long as you can until water gets in (you’re going to open your mouth eventually because your body will force you to after it runs out of air), filling up your lungs, and you just suffocate and choke on sea water with a couple hundred other people. Slowly.

Or maybe it goes down over a field and the jet fuel fumes just ignite everything, you included. Hundreds of people burning alive semi-trapped in the wreckage of a plane. You can burn alive in a car as well of course. But your car by mass isn’t 40% or so of fuel and it doesn’t travel at ~400MPH. If you need to escape your car quickly, there aren’t going to be 300 other people inside it who need to do the same.

All of those things are very unlikely, yes. But the trade off with airline safety is pretty severe. I’ve already decided that if I’m going to crash in a machine, that machine is not going to be an airplane.
