Kinja'd!!!

Just because you can import them doesn’t mean you have to. There are many other interesting options . It’s okay to be different.

If you’re in the US, you can’t import AZ-1 yet... production started in October 1992...

The R32 GT-R has been hyped to the moon and back and people act like they’re extremely rare and special. Now that everyone imported them, they’re pretty common. :)

So? They’re undeniably a cool car that has had a huge impact on car culture.
and it’s great that you guys over in the states can finally enjoy them.

Nearly all my mates have had one at some stage, wish I bought one back then so I could capitalise on the price hike since you guys started importing them. I can get R33's for pretty cheap at the moment though.

In other words, fuck those people who have waited 25 years or so of finally owning an R32 GT-R, you’re not a REAL enthusiast unless you own obscure JDM gems!

I for one am thankful that R32's of all shapes and sizes are being imported we have held out so long for these cars that have built a near universal reputation for being giant killers. Let people be and if you feel this strong about it import something else, you know like that saying “Put your money where your mouth is”.

I’m curious to know what will happen when R33s are legal for import... Many folks don’t like the look of the car but I do.

I’m going to bet demand for the R33 will be just as high because there are just enough people who do like the design.

If you want to import something not GT-R related that interests you, do that. It’s not the responsibility of GT-R owners to make sure the import scene is varied to your liking.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was legally imported. While the 25 year import rule is a hard stop, similar cars have leaked through using weird legal loopholes and/or good ol’ American politics (slip this guy a $20, donate to that politician, grease that wheel, etc).

Kinja'd!!! "Flavien Vidal" (flyingfrenchy)

There are no loopholes anymore (last one was through foreign diplomats living in the US and allowed to bring and sell their own imported cars). This car was illegally imported, I’m 200% sure about this. Worst is that it will never become legal even when it becomes 25 yo, unless it leaves the country, gets properly imported and registered elsewhere, granted that it comes from a country that can’t export it in the first place since it was never legally imported in it, and then it would have to be properly re-imported legally in the US.

Needless to say this will never happen. Having a car legally registered in your own state and legally imported on a federal level are two very different things.

Source: exporting cars from Japan to the US is my day job :)

I’d rather have an R32 than all of the others you posted. The AZ-1 and Cappucino are cool, but slow. 4x4 microvans are neat, but also small and slow. The R32 just works better in the USA in my opinion. But yeah enough people have them now that acting like it is a super special car is pretty dickish. Then again, we’ve all met people who think their 911 is the rarest most precious thing in the world until you remind them that Porsche sells around 10,000 of them here every year.

The thing is, people aren’t buying them because they’re extremely rare and special. They buy them because these were their dream cars when they grew up, and now that they can afford them, they splurge.

While your listed cars maybe Oppo’s dream cars, they never were the dream cars for current R32 owners.

I’ve missed the boat on R34's, they want big money for them in Japan.

I’m hedging my bets on a Stagea instead. much cheaper at the moment.

So please answer me this: Why import a GT-R when you can drive a USDM Subaru STi for much less money? Is the 1991 GT-R really that much faster than a 2005 Subaru? What about Evos? I understand that R32 GT-R’s are fast; I rode in one before they were even legal here. But there are a lot of fast 4wd cars already available in the States.

And if the appeal isn’t all about speed, then there has to be a line in the sand compromising between speed and uniqueness. I’m not mad that people have R32's in the states, but I am kind of perplexed at the fact that such a common car (relatively) is taking up so much space at a show that also features a Ferrari 275 GTB.

I, for one, will enjoy seeing another generation of Skyline at C&C. There were, what, six or seven R32s above? The only other JDM Skyline at the meet was an R31 (I think) sedan. Which was legitimately neat.

Kinja'd!!! "TylerLinner" (tylerlinner1)
04/15/2017 at 21:16, STARS: 0

All shapes and sizes? I’d have loved to see a sedan in the bunch. I’ve seen ten or more R32's in the states, plus an R31 (at this show) and a legal R34, and none of them were sedans.

I don’t have a problem with the fact that people own them, but it was odd seeing six or seven of the exact same car, mostly in the same color, lined up next to one another. I wouldn’t mind so much if there was a great variety of Japanese cars there, but I think this Fairlady in the parking lot could have used the space.

How common does a car have to be until you don’t park a line of them in a car show with limited space? The lot was packed and there were several rare classic cars in the parking lot which couldn’t get into the show. I understand it’s first come first serve, but didn’t this Datsun deserve a place next to its Nissan brothers?

Hakosuka coupes are pretty too though, especially uncut examples. In fact, I’ve seen about ten R32 GT-R’s but never a single Skyline of any sort that was older than the late 80's. Why?

There were people there with multi million dollar Italian classics. Therefore either it’s a matter of the rich people’s taste, or the Japanese car enthusiast crowd doesn’t have that kind of money.
