Kinja'd!!!

So, one of my besties and I went out car shopping for him and his dad. One of the candidates for the new car was at an admittedly really shady used car dealership. One of the few good cars we found on the lot was a 2010 Honda Civic. After screwing on a dealership plate he tossed us the keys and off we went!

My first impression was something completely unexpected. To me, driving a Civic feels like driving a spaceship. The highlight for me was the gauges. Honda hit it out of the park with the design of these. The top LCD reminds me of a video game HUD, but placed in a perfect place so that they’re always seen...and they’re pretty to look at.

It was decently fast too. Putting down the pedal for WOT action was greeted by a decent sounding engine and a predictable, but still nice surge forward.

This example (which wasn’t even worth taking pictures of) had a few glaring issues:

- The SRS light was on. (The dealership owner shrugged about it)

- The transmission seemed to shudder every once in a while. Or maybe it was the tyres? I tried testing my theories out by doing donuts in a parking lot, but couldn’t come to a consensus.

- The radio was asking for an unlock code (I bet the sucker was replaced with a potentially stolen unit).

Ultimately, we decided to shy away from the Civic (I’m not entirely sure what he chose, if he chose anything yet), but gosh did our little 25-some minute drive feel pretty neat. I wouldn’t mind having to have a Civic as a DD, I’d probably find it delightful...though I’d still want to own a Miata first. :)

I dunno what else to say, I’m bored at work, we’re having a hilariously slow day thanks to most schools being closed today. Normally I’d be sitting at 30 calls right now, instead I’ve had just 3.

Oh, and I’ve been in love with this commercial ever since I first saw it in 2007

Oppo, save me from boredom!

Unlock code on the radio probably just means the battery was disconnected for some reason. My parents have an older generation that does this.

The unlock code is an easy solution...the lack of a k20 and 6 speed is not

:D

I test drove a 2007 Civic EX at the same time I test drove the Mazda 3 I ended up buying. My impressions were of a well put together car that was easy to drive and live with but with a very squishy suspension resulting in lazy vehicle dynamics. Once I drove the Mazda there was no doubt which car I was going to buy. The civic is still way better than a corolla.

ha - I did the same thing, test drove a the Civic then ended up with my 3. I like the look of the Civic and the interior isn’t bad. Better gas mileage, though not quite as big inside. But the manual transmission in the car I drove was a box of rocks - it was terrible - and this was on a new car. I had owned two Hondas previously and loved their manuals. Now I love my Mazda even more.

The IP design was love/hate with the audience.

I personally think it was a stunningly clever, affordable, practical design. Exactly what Honda is good at.

Without resorting to a more expensive HUD, having the large speed readout as close to the windshield as possible is just excellent execution of basic ergonomics.

And just look at that steering wheel. At its debut in 2006, this Civic was way ahead of its time. My only complaint about it would be the extreme cab-forward design that requires long, thick A-pillars with massive blind spots.

I test drove a 2010 Si a few years back. It felt really numb. Would make a fine fun-ish daily. The 9th gen was much more engaging to drive and I want one yesterday.
