I'm feeling the call of the 911

I don’t really know why, but I’m lusting over the thought of a 911 as a ‘next’ car.

I think a lot of it is because I’m a huge fan of Salomondrin and his 911R is pretty incredible

It’s not like I’ve never been a fan of Porsche. I’ve always liked some of their cars but I never quite saw the appeal of the 911 over the Cayman. It’s always felt a bit overvalued: a top spec car only because the mid-tier is intentionally held back. A car more for making an appearance rather than enjoying a drive. A car that’s remained unchanged for so many years not because it is ideal but because it is an idea.

In reality it seems like a good fit for me. Attractive, supposedly great to drive, and with a certain level of comfort rarely found on something this sporty. It seems to promise a grand touring experience for cruising while still allowing for a sports car like nimbleness when called upon.

I think the final piece to my 911 puzzle was found by Matt Farah in his recent review of a 1997 car where he commented that the 911 offers a high level of refinement because all the noise of the car is behind you which sounded downright delightful to me.

I don’t know what I will do with this new interest. At the moment about all I can say is my “next car” list is topped by two wildly different contenders: the Mustang GT350 and the Porsche 911.

I like Porsches, but one thing I don’t like is how they all *look* like a front-engine car. Most rear (or mid, whatever) engine cars have a shallow nose that makes it obvious there’s no engine there. Why did Porsche do it differently?

They are both great choices. What I find is that no matter what car you had before, or what you enjoy driving a Porsche is the final step for a lot of people in the automotive ladder so to speak. I appreciate the refinement over the years as well as the heritage of the brand.

Also, you are the first person I’ve met who also enjoyes Salomondrin.

I was close this winter to getting an old 996. I looked at 2, both 1999s, around $20K, with between 25-40k miles. They were a blast to drive, the steering was phenomenal, and I could potentially drive both in the snow (one was a Carrera 2, other a 4). The manual transmission gate seemed awfully narrow (I kept getting 5th instead of 3rd), and the rear seats were almost too small for kids. Part of me regrets not getting one (both weren’t perfect) - but after the kids (or at least 2 out of 3) fly the coop I’ll get one.

I double dare you to buy a 911.

There are some pretty unique things about a 911 that makes them hard to not at least be curious about. First, they are about as iconic as you can get. Second, the passenger space v car footprint is way better than most; it’s allowed it to walk the line between GT and sports car(some 190 inch GT cars have similarly cramped looking rear seats). Finally, they are fast capable cars, of completely there own method(rear engined).

This all reminds me how much I can’t wait to get the 996 on the road.

I prefer the looks of the cayman over the 911, but would like the unusable backseat of the 911 for my pups. It’s handling is phenomenal, but it’s just so composed that it is almost boring. It’s also a little slow in a straight line for my liking (and it’s an S), mainly because I have to drive an hour plus to get to curvy roads. I am impressed with porsche, but that’s part of the problem. Not quirky enough. Also, everyone thinks I’m loaded because of the badge, and that gets really annoying.

Get an Elise. Way more smiles per hour than the porsche :)

I like the fact that he enjoys the hell out of his cars.

I’m a single car kinda guy, an Elise would not work for me. Maybe an Evora, but from a creature comfort standpoint I think it’s lacking at its price for my tastes

I think the nose is pretty low on the 911. It does make for a nice frunk though

Because it would be ugly.

It’s low, but it’s long.

I think evora is next on the list for me. Probably not a good decision tho. The elise was my only car for a bit, but always had the wife’s camry if needed

Probably to keep the frunk to keep it usable day to day. I think the main problem is that the front overhang os way too long.

I’m a huge fan of Salomondrin

Not to be too much of a hater, but...why? That guy bugs the hell out of me. To each their own, for sure, but what’s the appeal there?

Him and his gang are entertaining and have fun with cars in ways we never see? Idk, I like it and can’t pinpoint why
