Kinja'd!!!

This is a picture of my grandparents taken sometime in the late 1940s or ‘50s having a tailgate picnic. Can anyone tell what kind of station wagon they’re using?

I’d say a black and white one, but that’s too obvious.

So let’s go with awesome.

Gramps ’ facial expression just screams “ You ’ re not going to post this on the internet one day, are you? ” and Grandma is like “ FFFFFUUUU ” and ducking out of the frame. That how I imagine the picnic went down.

Came to say the same, about a ‘50 Plymouth Suburban. D Post is correct, taillamps and bumper guards are correct.

Yep, 1949 had many ridges on bumper and they got smoother in 1950 up.

Your “actually knowing what the fuck you’re talking about” beat the time on my IDing algorithm by a lot. I was working a search based on finding key year for manufacturer steelbody wagon crossover and indexing by taillight and bumper cleat appearance.

“Hey, Ramblin, why didn’t you just pick the #2 manufacturer in America at that time and see if it was them?” “SHUT UP IS WHY.”

LOL, well being 61 and those cars still running around when I was a kid in the 60s sure helps. I was born into a family of car nuts in NC. I’ve already let Steve Lehto know my dad was one of the short lived Tucker francise owners along with my uncle. They lost a ton of money for the time on that deal. Neighbor had a model T still in the mid 60s. School friend’s dad owned the local Chevy dealer, I recall seeing the split window Vette in the show room. We had a Jeepster and Willys Jeep at the time plus a newer Mercury wagon with rear facing 3rd seat. One of my other uncles ran a wrecking yard and another did furniture design in High Point but was also called on for seat designs for Ford and GM. He has passed away now . If you Google Ned Mizelle and seats or furniture you can find lots of his patents. He had over 600. Its in my bloodline. I think the first time my dad had me help work on a car I was about 9. He made me get my first car a used Fiat 850 spider before I even had my licenses so we could fix any issues.

You’ve got 30 years on me - I try hard and have the advantage of not living in the rust belt (also NC - mountains) to help me as far back as 70s cars, but a lot before that I’ve had to self-educate. Heavily.

I grew up riding in the back of a ‘73 Benz diesel and a ‘67 Land Rover, myself.

It looks like one of Ned’s designs from 1969 was used on or borrowed heavily from for the rocking chair in my living room. It’s kind of a crappy rocker recliner, but that’s all in the materials...

He did a lot of wall away recliners and sleeper sofa mechanism designs. Also Sealy mattress springs, even some years of Winnebago interiors. I think he did one of the Fox body Mustang front seat frames, Econoline van benchs in 70s and also had to go to court for GM on a lawsuit. A women claimed she cut of the end of a finger off while reclining her seat. He showed in court how the “accident” was set up and it was just to suck money out of General Motors.
