OK, I just marked my calendar for Airventure 2018 to see this! Of course, I was already planning on going anyways...

Awesome! Yet another rare warbird will return to the skies. Looks like the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum is continuing their 100% restoration and rebuild of the P-61 to flying status as well. In addition, the B-29 ‘Doc’, just recieved airworthines certification!

The chosen debut pilots are unknown at this time, but may have the last name “Slag”. Repeat, that is unconfirmed at this time.

There is one on display at the NMUSAF in Dayton.

Awesome they are getting this one airworthy again. The propellers have to spin in opposite directions, by the way. Otherwise it would only want to fly in a circle.

(Helpful elaborative image)

Plenty of twins, even very high speed combat twins, have engines spinning the same direction, so you’re overstated a little bit, but there are very good reasons to have all of the above cancelled if you can. Even if One Stupidly Huge Engine can in many ways be even worse than twin.

Circle.

ssssssssssssssuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrkkkkkkkkkkklllllllllll

Also this: “The XP-82 was to be powered by two Packard-built Rolls-Royce V-1650 Merlin engines. Initially, the left engine was a V-1650-23 with a gear reduction box to allow the left propeller to turn opposite to the right propeller, which was driven by the more conventional V-1650-25. In this arrangement both propellers would turn upward as they approached the center wing, which in theory would have allowed better single-engine control. This proved not to be the case when the aircraft refused to become airborne during its first flight attempt. After a month of work North American engineers finally discovered that rotating the propellers to meet in the center on their upward turn created sufficient drag to cancel out all lift from the center wing section, one quarter of the aircraft’s total wing surface area. The engines and propellers were then exchanged, with their rotation meeting on the downward turn, and the problem was fully solved. The first XP-82 prototype ( 44-83886 ) was completed on 25 May 1945, and made the type’s first successful flight on 26 June 1945. This aircraft was accepted by the Army Air Forces on 30 August 1945, whose officials were so impressed by the aircraft, while still in development, that they ordered the first production P-82Bs in March 1945, fully three months before its first flight.”

I did read that, and I think I know what they were going for based on the description of better one-engine control - increased relative angle of attack on the center wing when one engine was out. Trouble being - when the plane is moving slowly, the spiral slipstream from the two engines would have produced such a high relative angle of attack on the center wing that it would be in stall constantly until (maybe, paradox) off the ground and going very fast. Which, if it couldn’t get off the ground...

Oddly, they wouldn’t have had that problem with matched rotation. It would have flown, just would have done really fucky other things on takeoff or any situation with change of engine speed.

You can see even big B17s going into a P-factor and torque roll lean in movies against rudder, if you know to look for it. Those two factors combined with gyro precession were why the Sopwith Camels were known as widowmakers - green pilots getting off the ground, trying to turn right... and eating dirt.

There was some BIG HUGE ENGINE single plane I can’t remember which had a shorter wing on one side.

You’re using words but I don’t know what they mean.

Simplified: It would have been able to fly okay normally with both engines spinning the same, but it would have done goofy things on takeoff/etc.. To keep it from doing goofy things, they did something even more goofy which made it completely unable to fly by accident. They then ungoofed it by goofing it backwards. SUCCESS

Have you been before?

Yes, 4-5x I think, including the last two. Trying to make it an annual event. I have a 10 year old nephew who loves it, and my son is now 8 months. He’s too young for this summer, but hopefully soon...

Luckily I’m outside Chicago, with family in Milwaukee, so the trip is easy.

My brother is talking about staying in Camp Scholler for a few days this year or next, but no plans yet.

You’re a regular there, right?

Yep, this year will be my 21st trip. Camp Scholler is a spectacle in and of itself. Lots of fun. I’m also looking forward to introducing my son one if these years.

Yeah, there’s so much to see and do there, a day or 2 just isn’t enough. Plus, we never do any of the evening activities. Hopefully a longer trip will work this year—

You should try to catch the night show either Wednesday or Saturday. That, and a million other things. :)

The old rotary engines were the worst for this — so much rotating mass.

Even on a Cessna 172, with a whopping 160 HP and tricycle gear, there are a bunch of things that appear to be symmetrical to the naked eye, but are actually not, in order to counter the prop rotation.
