This sounds like when you are pouring out the last cup and the grounds go up against the screen letting a little bit of the grounds leak out. I hate that, and that is why I’m almost exclusively drinking espresso from my Gaggia Classic.

I don’t think that is pretentious. Too much of that silt makes my stomach do weird stuff.

Are you using a blade grinder or a burr grinder? You gotta grind gently.

Also, I’m super excited. When I walked into work Tuesday morning there was a brand new Bodum French press sitting on my desk, courtesy my boss. I’d been wanting one for a while but hadn’t ever gotten one.

Yeah, I know. Best boss ever. :)

I face the same problem. For a good while I was using my french press daily. It’s hard to beat once you get in to it

I have a cheap blade grinder and pulse it just a few times. Even then I either get boulders and dust, or a grind perfect for espresso.

Gaggia is great, very good machine, very reliable. If you are grinding your own you need to use a very high quality burr grinder. I use Lavazza perground and vacuum packed coffee, usually Qualita Rossa, and dark roast “espresso” I’ve also used their In-Blue which is very good.

I’ll let the boss know if you found someone who’ll pay $3000 for an accord interior. Because this (minus the MUGEN pillows):

Those machines are at the price point I’d really consider upgrading to, but you’re right in that I’d need a better grinder to really get an improvement, and decent grinders are just so damn expensive.

French press (and espresso, too) require a grind of consistent size.

You need a coarser grind for French press so that silt doesn’t bleed through the mesh or the sides of the plunger.

Kinja'd!!!

You need a fine grind for espresso, allowing for the water to seep through the compacted grounds slowly and come out producing a rich, thick drip.

Kinja'd!!!

Images are from this site which shows you which grind size to use for specific coffee making processes.

Blade grinders are really clumsy, imprecise tools that will always create an uneven grind.

Kinja'd!!!

They’re not so bad if you’re doing something like a drip coffee in the Mr. Coffee machine in your office break room, but for coffee making processes where it really is about coaxing very specific properties and flavors out of the coffee bean for very specific moods, then you’ll want a burr grinder, as shown in the lower left corner of the picture above.

You need to get yourself a decent burr grinder. I’ve got a Capresso 565 that has been awesome for getting a consistent grind. I got the stainless one, but it’s heavy as a tank and it’s like $30 cheaper to get the fake stainless one that is probably way lighter. It is amazing the difference in grind between a burr grinder and a blade grinder. My crappy old blade grinder would result in powder mixed with boulders. The burr grinder leaves grounds so consistent in size that they look professionally ground.

That’s why I use the Lavazza coffee, very good, very consistant and actually prices quite well at $5-$6 for an 8 oz can, that like $10-$12 per pound. Their lavazza espresso is designed (ground) for a pump espresso machine and makes terrific espresso.

Counterpoint: The silt is good. When I get to the bottom of the cup, I swish it around a bit and drink it. No harm, no foul.

Yeah, a while back I worked at a shop that served Illy, which is similar if not quite as good. Then they switched to a roaster that was local and emphasized freshness and lighter roasting, so now I’m hooked an that type of coffee and espresso; the brighter fruity roasts rather than the darker chocolatey roasts that Illy and lavazza have to do.
