Does everybody remember this story? A truck driver somehow did not see several road signs nor did she know how much her truck weighed and destroyed a historic iron bridge. Once they got the truck off this is what it looked like
When they posted this story on Jalopnik I believe people were skeptical of her being charged but I said she most likely would because my county is serious on their history.

She has been sentenced. Also, is it not crazy to think the restoration is costing $750000?!

$750k seems extremely cheap to me? I’d assume it would need to be replaced completely. I don’t think you could trust any components after they had been stressed like that.

Damn, that is surprising that they jailed her. I do remember this story, and her actions were definitely negligent.
Honestly, $750k to rebuild that bridge sounds pretty reasonable to me.

seems cheap
thats a lot of rivets to cut out. I would imagine a complete tear down. redo the footings and maybe reuse some peieces after being inspected.
Also redo the roadway to carry modern traffic.

I think 180 days sounds crazy. But on the other hand, I can’t believe somebody would see the sign, see the bridge, and not stop and think for a minute that maybe they’re about to make a huge mistake.

It’s being restored, I don’t believe it is allowed to be replaced. I’m assuming there will definitely be way stricter weight limits. I always thought anything more than a standard passenger vehicle was a bit much.

I guess the pricetag isn’t really that bad considering they found one of the few companies that specialize in restoring historical bridges(there’s a company for everything I guess). I believe originally they were quoted $1-$1.5 million.

I haven’t had the chance to watch any of the restoration work but I would assume its very extensive since part of the metal was straight up sheared off. I don’t believe redoing it for modern traffic is too much of a concern, it’s located on a mainly residential street. This definitely isn’t a main road through the area.

In order to protect the bridge in the future, they should dig a trench on either side of it and cover the trench with a steel grid (similar to the surface of the bridge) that would give in if pressure on it exceeds what the bridge can take. Truck would get stuck there instead folding a historical structure.
It would be analogous to the overhead beam/chains ahead of a low bridge.
