Well I guess I'll be ordering that dash cam sooner than later. (Taking suggestions too.)

I was driving home today when something yellow flew out the back of the truck. From the distance I was I just though it was a dollar store bag or something and didn’t worry about it, until it hit the road and mist started spraying out of it.

Turns out it was a freaking air compressor. Obviously I had more than plenty of time to react to it, but still. Shit’s cray.

Also at the next light I was in the right land behind a guy who was going straight. The dude who had the compressor flight out of his truck was behind me and got impatient, went over into the center lane, drove into the intersection on red and turned right. SMDH.

And to make it even worse I doubled back for the air compressor and it was gone already. Damn you cheap Houstonians! :)

Anyway here’s the cam I’m gonna get, but I’ll hold off for y’alls suggestions.

How about a dual-channel unit? My HDE-C18 isn’t as high-quality as that one there, but I really like being able to have both front and rear recording.

Lots of reviews here. I personally have the A119S + GPS in my F30 and G1W-C in my Solstice.

I just ordered one of these - cheaper and supposedly 1080p rather than your better 2K, but should still do the trick! I have a 32gb card to put in it. Should arrive next week or the week after!

I had read some decent reviews for it in a few places, so it seems like an OK option.

I have one of those and it works great! Only complaint is the mounting hole is a bit awkward, as it sometimes doesn’t clip in quite right. Other than that, it films quite well, and the mic isn’t half bad.

I guess I’ll look into. I never though about a rear one, but it makes since as common as getting rear ended is.

Can you read license plates from it, in reasonable conditions? That’s my main worry, is getting hit and them driving off.

I’d go with a G1W of some version.

Nice! That makes me feel more upbeat about the purchase....had you written about it on Oppo before? Maybe that is where I remember reading the positive reviews for it.

My only issue will be (and it’s not related to the camera) that my car has two 12v sockets in the front dash....the left one is an FM transmitter and charger for my MP3 player and phone. I only use it as a transmitter when my MP3 player is charging. When plugged into the Aux jack as you usually would do, the player makes weird clicking sounds while charging, but when plugged into Aux and NOT charging, it plays fine. (This may have something to do with that grounding strap in the engine bay that is completely split in two...?)

At any rate...can’t get rid of that as I use it all the time, so I prefer to leave it plugged in. The other socket has an emergency LED flashlight, which I could unplug, I guess, but I like it as it charges by being in a 12V socket and by leaving it there I know it’s always charged (you’d be surprised how often it comes in handy!)

Thinking of getting one of those 12v splitters you see to mount on the dash to I can have all three plugged in at once...

No review from me, but yeah, that will be an issue. I’ve found the battery life isn’t great, so I just leave it plugged in.

I’d strongly advise against getting a suction cup mount model. They take up too much space, and tend to bounce around a lot. An adhesive mount model would be better. https://dashcamtalk.com/ is the place for reviews. I use an A118/B40 but that’s probably a bit dated at this point, I’d want something higher-res if I were buying now (not that 1080p is awful by any stretch, but we can do better).

IANAL, but even if the air compressor hit you and you had it on a dash cam I don’t think it would help much. To claim any liability against the other driver, you’d have to prove negligence on his part - that he both did nothing to secure the compressor and knew that it would be dangerous. If he even tried to tie it down at all but it didn’t hold up, he wouldn’t be at fault. And unless the impact caused you to impact another car or disabled your vehicle, the cops couldn’t even do anything with the plate, because it is a civil matter at that point. As much as it sucks, getting hit with crap flying out of other cars/trucks is typically covered by your insurance policy and not that of the driver. I think in most cases it’s a collision claim, not a comprehensive claim. It’s a reminder that it’s a good idea to keep collision insurance on your vehicle. All that being said, I still think a dash cam with a good enough picture to read plates is a great idea. If you are going the other way and got hit by compressor guy when he darted into the intersection on red? Then you’d definitely want the dash cam footage. I’ve had to swerve to avoid crap falling from trucks many times. But I’ve had to avoid other idiots merging into my lane, rolling through stop signs, making illegal lefts, etc. far more often.

Night condition isn’t as good on the G1W, that’s why I had a long debate to share the cameras and end up with another A119 instead. So depends if you drive near dawn or dusk a lot.

Most cameras you can get separate mounts.

I didn’t use the suction that came with my G1W-C, and ordered a rearview clip along with it.

Also there’s actually an updated A118, the A118C2. Still a very popular model.

I power mine with a mini 2 port USB charger, so I’ve got one for the camera and one for the phone: https://www.amazon.com/AUKEY-Charger-Output-iPhone-Samsung/dp/B00M6QODH2

With my A118 recording at 1080p, license plates are generally pretty readable at about a car length, including in adjacent lanes, and blur out from there. Out to about three car lengths you get enough detail that you could figure out the plate if you needed to (or at least get enough to identify the car for an investigation).

Some screen captures (keep in mind that the fisheye tends to make things look closer than they are):

Just ordered the G1W-C. I didn’t get the rear view mount because it won’t work the way my mirror is. I know other one’s come with some 3M tape. Could I just take the cup off and use the 3M adhesive?

I recently purchased and installed a Thinkware F770 with the second channel rear camera and a parking mode battery. I need to pull some video off of it and really look closely at how readable license plates are and such, but cursory inspection showed the picture quality to be pretty good.

This is what I’ve got in the Leon. Very pleased with it, can read number plates fine even in less than ideal conditions. Still need to put some black tape over the LED on the rear cam cos it’s really noticeable at night when the car is parked up!

I can’t remember exactly, but the adhesive mount is separate.
