The Darien Gap always fascinates me. I am shocked that there has never been enough desire to travel by land in that area to motivate the building of at least one major road.

In the early 20th century you have to figure it was a defensive mechanism as much as anything else. No economic development there to the point it would be worthwhile to provide the Colombians an easy way to get an army in to retake the country. At this point, it seems like there would be some value in building a road, even if it’s not anything that could really be called a highway.
