Woke up late. Running late. Went to put Ginger in the kitchen for the day and she jumped down off of her window perch, started yelping and limping, and now she won’t put any weight on her right front paw. I can’t see anything wrong but something definitely is. So, she has to go to the vet. What a day already! This is turning into a banner week. I’m going to do my best to keep a positive attitude, though.

I’m hoping she just jammed a toenail or something. She lets me touch it when she is sitting or lying down, but she won’t put any weight on it.

I hope so. I hate to think about it but she isn’t a young girl anymore. She is turning 9 this June 29. That’s not her real birthday - it’s just the day we adopted her from the rescue in 2012. The vet estimated that she was 4 or 5 then, so we went with 4 and that’s how we know her birthday/age.

But, she’s half Jack Russell and half Beagle and both of those breeds live quite a while.

Had that happen to a dog once. Vet wanted $800 for x-rays or something like that. I opted to pass. Seemed like couldn’t you just assume it wasn’t great and splint it? I think most of the cost was because they wanted to put the dog under general anesthesia for the x-ray, which seems unnecessary?

In any event, dog was fine after a few days of limping around, so guess it was just a sprain or something.

Sending good thoughts. Two weeks ago we thought that our black lab was ready to go (she’s 12). She couldn’t breathe and was very lethargic, so my wife (I was out of town) rushed her to the emergency vet. They were afraid she might not make it for 24 hours until I got back home — thought she had a tumor inside her heart that caused a massive amount of fluid to build up around her heart and in her lungs. When I came back, they had drained all the fluid but she was still having problems. We went ahead and took her home so she could spend one last night there with the family and her adopted sister. Woke up the next morning, she was kind of spunky so we decided to see what would happen over the weekend. She kept improving! She’s still not 100% but is back to wanting to chase squirrels and bark at bunnies.

tl;dr: Your pup will be fine in no time!

They think it is a neck or shoulder injury. Maybe a pinched nerve. Doing x-rays as a precaution. No jumping for two weeks. Has to be on anti-inflammatory and pain medicines for two weeks also.

Good news. Although we also have a beagle mix, and trying to keep her from jumping for two weeks would be like trying to keep the sun from coming up. But if it hurts her to stand, maybe that will keep her from jumping.
