“In criticizing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s alleged use of chemical weapons, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Tuesday that even Adolf Hitler did not sink to that level of warfare , despite Hitler’s use of gas chambers to kill millions of Jews.
When given the chance to clarify his comment — uttered during Passover, the most celebrated Jewish holiday in the United States — Spicer then said Hitler took Jews “into the Holocaust center” but that Hitler “was not using the gas on his own people in the same way that Assad is doing.”
Can someone please send Spicer to the Holocaust center? Whichever definition of that you want. I don’t care.

Fair, but if you’re going to get semantic like that, then using chemical weapons against civilians isn’t warfare either. I mean, lots of Germans were strung up at Nuremberg for things that were just good old fashioned war crimes and not necessarily related to genocide.
It’s funny, in a way. If Spicer hadn’t followed up with the boner to end all boners, he’d still be so very wrong just for insinuating that what Assad is doing counts as warfare.

Genocide isn’t warfare? Just because an army is killing non-combatants as opposed to another army, wouldn’t the use of a military unit still categorize it as an act of warfare?

No Genocide isn’t warfare. Obviously genocide is attempting to exterminate a race and warfare is just war. The difference with genocide is, using gas or not to commit it is almost irrelevant. Since the main problem is the genocide itself. Warfare on the other hand is “legal,” but you’re not breaking any laws until you use gas (Obviously there’s other rules, but we’re just talking about gas here.)

Not even getting into how fucked up of a corollary that is to begin with but that’s not even factually or semantically correct, the Wehrmacht used poison gas (forget which one) on Soviet troops during the Crimean Campaign in 1942 and had planned to use gas in defense of the Normandy beach landings in 1944. So, in a shocking turn of events, someone else in this Administration talks out of their ass.

The dumbest part about this is that using chemical weapons on innocent civilians that you’ve rounded up is much worse than using them in warfare where the innocent civilians are collateral damage.
