There was a long time there when a Benz was more or less a peerless vehicle.

These cars, before the 5 mph bumpers and whatnot kind of ruined the look, are just gorgeous to me (perfection is a 280SE 4.5 convertible). One of the first cars I drove was my dad’s ‘77 280SE, bought used. It was an amazing car to drive, compared to what Detroit and Japan were putting out back then. Good times!

And to think this was the base model. The 2.8 coincides with sidemarker lights. 1968-72, although these seem to be more common in the earlier years of that run.

You got its’ best angle.

I’ve never been a fan of the Mercedes grille and think it should’ve been long gone in favor of a full-width front by the time the /8 appeared. At least when the British put a ‘30s grille on a ‘60s car it was in service of badge-engineering; Mercedes had no other divisional brands and no excuse for that schnozz.

Welcome!

I do with I had one of those, I have a dark blue 300D and it is in my eyes the last classy sedan they made. I have a 1983, the last year with no computer. I think the W123 started in 1976. The dash in those is mucho sexy. I want to switch to euro bumpers.

Dad had a 280 SE 4.5 back in the day. It was glorious. If you ever buy an old Benz, buy a v8 or 6 cylinder gas model. The diesels are brutally slow.

Thanks, I do think dark blue on them is pretty good. These tried to keep some of the old style while providing a safer and more modern car, for 1976 that is, they were made until 1985, last two years had computers and 82-85 had turbos on diesels. They are pretty unique, it isn’t an experience like other cars. It isn’t as good as the 60's car in your picture, 69 or so, they are stunning inside, parts and service are pretty expensive though, you are in Mercedes Classic Dept. territory.....

The one you showed:

You can see what they wanted to do but it’s nothing compared to the old ones. Every little thing in the old one is expensive if you are trying to fix one up though!

This is on my “someday” list. But having dealt with a 90s car for the past 3 years, I’m not ready for an 80s car. I need to cut myself a reliability break with a newer toy for now.

I had that moment with a W113 250SL a while ago. Pictures do not do them justice.
