Kinja'd!!!

I have an Emerson alarm clock I got many years ago. It does everything I want in an alarm clock: it has bigass numbers I can read without my glasses, dual alarms, a day-of-the-week display, battery backup, and auto-daylight savings time. But my wife hates it because she thinks it’s ugly .

You can see the supposedly-ugly alarm clock on my nightstand on the left of this photo of my bed covered in the parts of the new dresser I assembled this past weekend, with no help from my cat.

Kinja'd!!!

So no, it doesn’t fit the overall vibe she’s creating in our bedroom. I found this fake wood alarm clock at Target, that sorta goes with what she likes, but it may or may not have a battery backup, and has no day display or auto-DST setting. Oh, how I shudder at the horror of having to remember what day it is, and re-set my clock twice a year!

Kinja'd!!!

Looking on Amazon, there are countless versions of the same basic idea of a fake wood looking digital alarm clock with even less features than this one. There’s also several sellers packaging the same thing called a “dementia clock” for elderly people who can’t remember if it’s morning or night, but it’s like an 8x10 picture frame which is a bit excessive, and, you know, I don’t have dementia.

Kinja'd!!!

Somebody, please find me a clock that has all the features I like of my current alarm clock, but also blends with the decor better, so my wife stops talking trash about my “ugly” alarm clock!

UPDATE: Holy crap, all of you said “use your phone” at the same time! I like to be able to see what time it is without having to fumble around with a phone, and I have terrible vision so I need the big numbers to be able to do this.

I have an alarm clock. I don’t know why. I can’t see it without my glasses and I have never even set an alarm on it.

I had a similar problem trying to find something in a classic alarm clock style. Never did have any luck.

I’m a fan of the “atomic” clocks. You’re already on Amazon, and I got nothing better for your decor.

How come you don’t use your phone? I’ve been using my phone as an alarm clock since flip phone days.

I find that my phone is a better alarm clock then any dedicated device I’ve seen. The light function on the Philips wake up lights is cool, but the alarm function is awful, basically a 1980's device strapped to the light.

Because I like to be able to roll over and see what time it is without fumbling around with a phone, and I also have terrible vision so I need the big numbers to accomplish this.

Maybe digital clock that looks nice and use your phone as an alarm? I’ve been burned twice by alarm clocks likely due to my own user error but nevertheless burned so I stopped using them for good.

Off-topic, but that first pic caught my eye, because it’s like my special number or something. I guess it’s a circadian rhythm thing? I dunno, I just see 11:38 a lot, both AM and PM. It’s like I feel the urge to check the time at 11:38 more strongly than at any other time during the day. It’s weird.

“I know this clock sticks out like a sore thumb with the vision you have for the decor in our bedroom but suck it up, you’re just going to have to deal with it,” does not strike me as a winning strategy.

Married life is about knowing when to choose one’s battles.

Generally we keep our phones, tablets, laptops, etc on this bookshelf downstairs where we park all the chargers. Sometimes one or both of us will bring a tablet to bed, I particularly enjoy falling asleep to Bob Ross videos, but it’s not consistently every night where I could use my tablet as my every-day alarm.

Damn that’s kind of crazy to me, can’t imagine leaving my phone downstairs every night. Hell just in 2016 alone I had 2 emergency phone calls in the middle of the night.

Wife bought one of these at Bed Bath & Beyond or Target.

Kinja'd!!!

Ours has a switch on top for 3 brightness modes. time set is easy, AAA battery backup and has two front USB charging ports. Wasn’t very pricey. Was about $25-30. The best part other than time is the USB ports work fairly well and brightness control, its not lighting the entire bedroom at 3am.

Atomic clock would be good. There are others I’ve seen that pair to your phone with bluetooth to update things but that seems fiddly to me. All of them are not much of an aesthetic improvement over my current clock.

Right, like when you do it doggy style all she will be focusing on is that ugly clock. Then the round is over and you lose.

We put our phones on priority notification mode so an emergency call will still ring. Our bedroom door is basically right at the top of the stairs and the bookshelf is at the bottom of the stairs. If there was an emergency call we might have to call someone back but it’s no problem. We just don’t want the phones in the bedroom every night.

I’d say $50 or less so that rules out your link.

Also while that may be pretty in a retro-gadget sort of way, it’s just too attention-getting and also lacks the functions I want.

Its not pretty but its small enough that its not a problem. They may make it in a wood version too. We had a nice real wooden clock for years with atomic clock signal reset. Never could find an identical replacement after a lightning storm surge killed it.

That’s the thing. Finding everything you want in a clock is easy. Finding the right style is near impossible.

I would love for somebody to find me a projection clock....I have an older Sylvania clock that is starting to die, but it also has a built in projection function. It’s nice waking up at night without having to twist myself around to see what time it is. I wake up looking at the ceiling...bam, there’s the time in big red glowing numbers!

Lol not with that response! De-escalate is the name of the game - “Eh it’s not that serious” is probably a better response. Never ever use the phase “suck it up” unless you are talking about sex.

Oh, there are tons of projection clocks, like these . I just don’t think they’re enough of an aesthetic improvement for my wife to go for it. She also probably would get annoyed at the projection, she’s very light-sensitive.

Warning - rant ahead!

Why the hell is it so hard to find a decent alarm clock anymore? They’re either some hipster, $300, fancy schmacy, clock-iPhone charger, or some worthless POS with a terrible interface, unusable radio, and tiny buttons no one can find in the dark?

I know, I know, everyone is moving to their phones. But like the OP said, it would be nice to find a decent clock radio that looks great, had a good interface, and doesn’t cost as much as a monthly car payment.
