A high school geometry teacher, a V12 boat engine, and an old Chevy.

Tasteful build, but also VERY confusing. As Jay points out, this is a V12, where’s the third pedal? Also, how could a geometry teacher afford this? The build took 4 years, so that’s part of it. But he only put 1500 miles on it since then and Jay was the first person to go full throttle, which scared the guy.

I hope this dude has other classic cars, because if I spent 4 years of my life building something, there would be more than 1500 miles on it in less than a month. So maybe he’s driving other things? Though I wouldn’t be surprised if his only other car is a Honda Fit.

This could be a case where the creator didn’t expect to be so terrified of his creation when it was finished. Perhaps both the horsepower and the prospect of damaging it are too much for him, and that’s why he’s selling it. This is the antithesis of the David Freiburger “just get it running so you can enjoy it” mentality. Very strange.

I watched this last night and was thoroughly confused: each minute of the walk around showed more and more modifications that did not work the way they would have in my head.

The owner doesn’t seem to fit the car. I mean to go 45mph and say that is the fastest that car has ever been is a bit concerning. I don’t understand why he built the car the way it is if he wasn’t going to at least play a bit, if you are going to go only 36mph, there are plenty of houseboat engines out there.

Well said. You’d expect a total nutcase to build something like this, and then do rolling burnouts in it with reckless abandon.

Dude’s shirt bugs me more than anything. I kept waiting for the fupa to pop out.

At the very least I would expect him to do it off-camera (like an alter ego or something), but I don’t think this guy would.

But hey, if a math teacher can custom build his own monster, there is hope for all of us menial employees.

My high school physics teacher was everything this guy isn’t. He used track videos @ Lime Rock in his 944 turbo to explain momentum. So yes, there’s hope!

Some people are just a different sort. My grandfather for example never drove a project car until it was 100% finished...not 90, not 95, 100. The last car he ever worked on was a late MGB he swapped a GM V6/5 speed into, and he didn’t drive it because he didn’t have the right speedometer gear. Dude was dying of cancer and still wouldn’t do it because he wasn’t done, never drove it before he passed. Me, I’d have been driving it while sitting on a milk crate.

Maybe that guy just enjoyed the build more than the finished product. I don’t think he’s necessarily scared by it, but he could be scared FOR it...he put in all that work, doesn’t want to break it, something like that.

I think you’re exactly right. He probably wanted something to do since he’s retired and he couldn’t pass the opportunity. I still didn’t understand why Leno asked if he considered a manual transmission. The guy just said he doesn’t drive fast so it clearly is something he just wants to cruise in.

I don’t think it’s all that strange to enjoy the process of the build more than driving it. Especially if you’re somebody who isn’t all that flush with cash and has a ton of money sunk in to the car. I’m sure the thought of anything happening to that car scares him more than the thought of hurting himself.

I’m so far over the ‘why didn’t you get a manual noob?!?’ thing that it’s ridiculous. The guy had a vision and built it, and like you said he wanted to cruise around with it so an automatic is the right choice. Sometimes you make a ton of power just to do it, not to win stoplight drag races. The dude built that thing the way he wanted to and used it how he wanted to, I’ve got no issue.

Man you and me both. If you buy a corvette and it’s and automatic guess what it’s still a corvette. If getting in that car makes you feel like a kid again or brightens your day so be it. Just like the whole lifted truck thing. If that truck never leaves pavement and it makes you happy why do I care?

Yup. Not to even mention people with a bad hip or knee who just can’t do a clutch anymore. Other people’s cars are other people’s cars...somebody can buy whatever my dream car du jour is and do whatever I wouldn’t do to it and I couldn’t possibly care less.

My daily is a god damn triple locked FZJ80 Land Cruiser, and while I would like to take it off road theres literally nowhere I can within 100 miles. But I love the god damn thing anyway.

I watched that yesterday, he mentions people who did work on the car being friends of his for years. Perhaps they got in on the car to sell it. It’s for sale and could go for some cash.

Exactly. Cool car also. I’m actually considering a 200 series Landcruiser. My children and I like to get lost in the woods but I also don’t want to worry if we’ll be stuck in the woods and it will be a traveling wagon.

If you want to not get stuck, a Cruiser is hard to beat. I sometimes think I’d be better off with a newer one, but I just like looking at my truck, haha. The 200 series are awesome though, I used to sell Lexus and the LX570 was far and away my favorite vehicle there.
