Kinja'd!!!

I require advice of an exhaust nature. What would be the best (sane budget) muffler x2 for the Galaxie? I’m leaning toward Porters. It ought to be a concentric muffler to fit in the stock location (don’t say Cherrybombs).

Right now I have single exhaust which is crimped over the rear axle, torn off mounts, cracked at the “Y”, ruste’d, and most importantly not dual.

I’m a fan of the Magnaflow oval mufflers, they’re not hollow sounding or loud like a flowmaster knockoff and they’re decently priced for a quality muffler. They’re built similar to a glasspack, but don’t sound as cheap or as raspy.

Plus they’re available in all kinds of sizes and offsets.

A coworker also recommended Magnaflow. The stock location would fit their 4" round and would probably fit the 3.5x7 oval just fine. Stainless too, not that I’d be doing the whole system in stainless. Going to have to compare them and the Porters on speakers other than the shitty ones at work.

The Porters are similar in some respects - steel wool packing instead of fiberglass, etc., but use a spring (!) instead of the perforated tube, and are a bit heavier. Probably quieter at full throttle, which could be a plus.

Ahhh, crap. I can never remember the name, but I have some unknown company’s stainless muffler on my 944 and it was crazy cheap for the quality and price. All kinds of configurations available.

Ha! Found it - http://performance-curve.com/maxflow.aspx

They’ve got one that might work.

I’m looking at 2" dual, with an axial cylinder type design, so very few aftermarket mufflers line up that aren’t a glasspack style, and I want to be at least one step up on a glasspack so I can actually drive the stinking car.

I can’t vouch for the sound on a V8 but the one I have on my 944 sounds pretty good, and it’s definitely a quality stainless steel - no trace of rust on mine even after surviving a Michigan winter.

The magnaflows on my Legacy GT are a bit on the loud side, but I also have no cats or resonator (Thanks to previous owner), and the mufflers are probably oversized and right at the rear bumper, and I had to use the 14in case. They’re still entirely livable though, with only a slightly annoying resonnance at cruise.

Longer case and smaller diameter (I’m running two 2.5in mufflers), plus a long tail pipe should help quiet it down.

Well, the stock muffler location on the Galaxie is *exactly* at the rear bumper on either side, so there will be no muting unless I put them somewhere screwy and non stock. Annoying resonances are supposed to be something the Porters are good at, and with being made out of 16GA steel (!) they’d not be rusting through any faster than the magnaflows. They do some weird sounds in certain ranges, though.

Here’s a set on a 352.

super 44's sounded amazing on the Montego but with that trans, were deafening on the highway.

I’ve pretty much settled on the Porters at this point. There are cheaper alternatives, but much less bombproof, and with a lot more unknowns involving their noise handling if mounted at the stock location, since the stock location involves about two feet of pipe after the muffler to the tip. They’re period-appropriate, unusual sounding, and not likely to do anything really obnoxious I won’t be aware of until they’re installed.

Well if you’re not going 44 I still prefer the flowmaster sound on a Ford small block. The 40 would do nicely.
