I’m not going to get into the meat and ‘tatoes of it, but times on YouTube are rough if you have less than a bajillion subscribers and views and likes per video. So if you see someone you like making content that’s relative to your interests, do them a favor and whitelist them (or turn OFF) on your ad blocker, give the video a like, a comment, and a share. Like this one:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Otherwise they might not be around, or get stuck behind a paywall *COUGH*/Drive*COUGH*Motor Trend On Demand*COUGH*

Roadkill isn’t stuck behind a paywall...it just takes awhile for their episodes to become free on Youtube.

The Smoking Tire’s ‘All Cars Go To heaven’ series are some of my favorite automotive videos....can’t wait until the third one!

So far, Reidus and Cletus has accrued some $31 US in YouTube income. Not why we do it but yeah, YT is a bitch. Only people that can really make money at it are people with silly “gaming” shows or vlogs that have no overhead. Just talking head stuff. Too bad because we love making long-form content but YouTube rewards hits, not production.

I’ve made a little over $200 total in the 5+ years I’ve been doing it. I don’t foresee that happening ever again if they keep going the way they’re going. But its more of a hobby for me, I don’t rely on it or try to get more revenue from it than what I have in the past.

You want to REALLY make money on YT? Do toy reviews. Holy moly.

No but all the extras they tease you with are. And in the day and age of being (and commenting) FIRST! on everything, people can’t wait 30 days for the free stuff.

So they complain.

Yeah? The stuff that gets traction always baffles me. My publication, Driving, gets views totalling about a small city every week and even then the income is just a joke. We make money on print ads and website banners. YT is almost too small to even bother.

YouTube will become smarter as they always have.

Gaming channels cater to people who, to generalise, have little to no consuming power—these are not people advertisers want watching their commercials. That gamer channels have bazillions of subscribers is evidence of the huge inefficiency in targeted advertising. I love video games too, but let’s be real, the people who “watch other people play games” have all the time but no money.

Eventually YT will figure out how to optimise the “New Media” to target people who will actually buy the advertisers’ products. This monetisation tightening is just the start.

Yup, parking brake, common use actually so that way there aren’t shoes inside the rotor housing taking up space, etc.

That is shitty to hear because I much prefer the long great production pieces rather than the talking head BS. Why would I want to watch people react to playing a video game?! That is stupid. I want content I can only experience through others. Like moving from one province to the other in the winter in an old truck. Anyway. i wish you all the best with that endeavour!

And you guys make great content! YT is frustrating for most I’ve met that are trying to make money off it. I made a video a while back and didn’t monetize it, but now it has 250k views. Think I might go monetize it now just for kicks.

From what I understand, to make real money on YT you need tons of content and a large subscriber base. Unfortunately both are a bit difficult to do with a low overhead in the automotive world. I’ll make sure to turn of Adblock for you guys.

I kind of wonder why Matt doesn’t charge an application fee for one takes. If he does 3/wk and charges $100 per car, thats an extra $15k/yr. Should make up for some lost ad revenue and that only charging for ones he actually shoots.

While it might work for larger channels, I don’t think they have enough viewers on thier own that will make a paywall worth it. They COULD go the Patreon route, and offer videos to Patrons a day or two in advance, then on YT later.

That sounds like good plan, and you’re probably right about the paywall limitations. I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes a move like the ones were discussing within the next few months. Makes me sad that YT is hurting its content creators.

YT needs to decide what it wants to be, and become more open and communicate with its creators. Not just make changes to ads and algorithms and not respond to the feedback they’re given from those that rely on them for a paycheck.
