They ’ re pretty edgy, but not that THAT edgy. However, I could totally see a SWA flight attendant make a reference during the announcements.

If I’m on an airliner and they ask me to deplane for some reason, I am going to oblige them. I am not feeling a vast amount of sympathy for this man, especially given that he’ll be drinking free drinks in First Class for the rest of his life.

Did he respond in the best way possible? No. But United handled it poorly from the beginning.

They had 4 employees dead-legging it to the destination airport so they could work a flight from that airport the next day. This was the last departure to that airport of the day. There are accounts from multiple passengers overhearing gate agents talking about the situation before boarding and yet nobody tried to bump people at that time, instead they waited until the plane had already boarded.

It’s one thing to ask people sitting in the airport, waiting for their flight, if they’re willing to take a later flight. Maybe someone goes up to the counter and says “I’m thinking about doing this, how will you get me to my destination?” and the gate agents can sort them out. But United fully boarded the plane and then tried to get people to leave after they’ve already psychologically gotten to the point of “I’m going home.” People are less open to getting off the plane than not getting on it.

But even if United ended up needing to involuntarily bump people, if they did it before boarding, they wouldn’t have to physically remove them from the plane.

FAA rules or the United carrier agreement (I forget which) offer up to $1350 in compensation for being bumped, but after $800, the United folks stopped offering more money and started with the random selection.

This guy refused and United escalated the situation further, but United created the situation and made it more likely that someone would react poorly.

Based on my own experience with particularly unhelpful airlines, when curveballs happen, I go into full-on “I MUST MAKE THIS SITUATION WORK FOR ME” mode and try to sort things out. I would be polite, but only comply once they gave me a full detailed explanation of both how they plan to get me to my destination at no additional cost to me, and how much they’re going to compensate me for my trouble. I certainly wouldn’t just get right up without some answers.
