Kinja'd!!!

So I missed my mark and won’t be able to flip a classic car at Mecum Indy this year. But it got me thinking... what is the best way to sell a collectible or classic?

Ive flipped a dozen cars through Craigslist, but those are low dollar commuters.

Live auctions are awesome, but do they pull the best prices?

BAT or ebay auctions?

Hemmings classifieds?

How do I get the most out of my classic or collectible car flip?

taking them off sweet ramps is a surefire way to flip them!

Yeah but to get an insane stunt bonus equaling the value of the car will be tough

I can only answer as someone who is constantly looking at classic cars for sale, as opposed to, ya know, a *real* buyer, but I’d say Autotrader Classics, Hemmings, maybe e-bay. I hear so many stories of buyers reneging on e-bay though. Recently, someone here on Oppo tried to sell a ~70 GP on e-bay, and IIRC, it was a lousy experience. Make-specific clubs are always a good option. Now you know all of my browser bookmarks. :)

I’m quick to say BaT, but timing is everything there. I think the answer here is multiple platforms. Classics appeal to more than just car enthusiasts, so I would go: Auto trader classic, hemmings, local facebook swap/sell groups. I would also be at cars & coffee every weekend. Maybe even post in model specific forums.

Whatever you do, just make sure to include the phrase “I know what I’ve got”

Depends on the car. Some are meant for auction houses, many do better elsewhere.

BaT also suffers from unpredictable waves of snobbery, or seems to.

If you’re not in a hurry you could wait until the Auburn fall auctions.

How do you mean? The comments? When I first started looking at bring a trailer a few years ago, there were all kinds of cars. Now it seems to be mainly pristine examples of the most popular BMW, Porsche, Alfa models. Questionable cars are often picked apart by commenters.

Mostly I mean that while questionable cars get picked apart by commenters, that sometimes *marginal* cars get an early slam-wave building up due to somebody not liking a specific aspect of it. Cars that (IMO) deserve a chance get a black mark in discussion early on that confuses all idea of value, as additional people pile on. “Oh dear, X does sound bad - can’t have that”.

If the only cars that get broad approval on BaT are the ones that don’t have anything wrong with them, that defeats the purpose.
