Kinja'd!!!

Ouch that looks bad. VW should just offer this much better looking Skoda.

The Skoda is probably too small and expensive for the American market. The American market will require a low tech high displacement engine as well. Quite the opposite of what a European consumer expects of a boat like that. There’s a reason why that VW won’t be available in Germany.

VW already tries to out-beige the Camry and Accord with the tragic Chattanooga built Passat and it doesn’t really work. The Atlas will sell for sure but VWs reputation took a giant hit and they already had a bad rep before the Diesel scandal, so why should customers choose an Atlas over a trusty ol’ Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander? Time will tell.

She’s 30cm (11.8") shorter than the Atlas.

But she’s still seven seats, if specced as such.

Whole 30cm? That’s more than I expected. Still prefer the Kodiaq’s look.

It’s a booming market segment in the US and VW would be mad not wanting a piece of that pie. Why anyone would pick the VW over one of the equally boring but probably more reliable competition is beyond me. These VW whales will need a unique selling point. I’m not seeing this USP in the Atlas and might be overlooking it, but without USP it’ll fail.

Then again, I’m utterly uninterested in the segment of the Atlas anyway and am located on a continent the Atlas wasn’t designed for. I bet VW could care less about me not seeing the point.

Ye’, the Atlas comes in at 503cm in length against the Kodiaqs 470cm.

Baring in mind the Kodiaq is based on it’s sisters the VW Tiguan (448cm) and Seat Ateca (436cm), so itself is stretched.

The Kodiaq is closer to the Touaregs 480cm than it is to it’s sisters.

It looks kinda like what a pre-production Ford Explorer would have looked like for the current generation of Explorers. The ones they make to gauge interest and opinions before they are massaged into a final production piece.

That was my point with the USP. At least the TDI was fairly unique. This time they played it super save and it will sell. Somehow. Still couldn’t give two shits about it.

Out of my American relatives probably only my grandmother would consider a VW after her surprisingly reliable Mexican built MkIV Jetta. But that’s it. Apart from that only Japanese.

Looking at those lengths they really aren’t all that huge. Shorter than expected. My old 406 coupe is 462 cm long, so significantly longer than the Tiguan. It’s not a minivan though, nor has it’s got the lardy look.

It’s rather odd because even Piglet comes in at 486cm.

The Kodiaq was posted to be the Superb SUV.

It’s the crossover fallacy, at least in Europe. People buy crossovers for their space, even though wagons from the same brand frequently offer more usable space (length x width) while costing less. The crossovers do have a height advantage.
