This one creates a strong impression that the head wasn’t really the issue:

or that they half-assed installing this one as well (granted they don’t really have the option of getting the surfaces machined at this point, and the damage from crappy treatment of the head bolts is done).

Dealerships hate him! One weird trick to getting your CJ working again!

It’s gotta be a timing chain/gear issue at this point, doesn’t it? I’m not a mechanical wiz but that seems the most likely thing to cause the compression issue in all cylinders to me. A valve open during the compression stroke due to mechanical timing issues?

Don’t compression testers normally hold their value until you hit a release button?

He said that he checked the cam & timing gears, which I’m guessing was just a quick visual to see if they exploded or not. He then said that timing was “on point”, but Bill Caswell noted that the intake valves seemed to open a tad late, and I think he might be onto something there.

David hasn’t been very active in that comment section, so I don’t know if he saw Bill’s reply or not. He’s probably more focused on wrenching right now than keyboard troubleshooting. I hope he does take a closer look at those timing components.

Whatever went wrong, it went wrong with all cylinders at once...

Broken camshaft is my guess.

His latest instagram says it was the cam gear.

So the camshaft timing gear had a crack and let it wobble around, messing up the timing. New gear and he should be good to go.

it looks to have been one of the fiber gear timing sets, that has a center metal hub, and an attached fiber gear around that hub. it looked to have somehow delaminated or just outright separated.

metal still rules.......

I would say 70 years is a pretty solid run for a timing set.
