If any Oppos have been losing oil or fouling up the cylinder #1 plug on their 5.3L, replace your old driver’s side valve cover with an updated one. The new cover was $80 and it took about thirty minutes. Apparently the hole for the breather tube causes oil to drip straight into the cylinder when the engine is running on four cylinders. The new cover supposedly remedies that by moving the location of the hole.

What years does this apply to?

This was on a 2010 Silverado. I don’t know when they finally decided to update the covers. Pulling the driver side cover is really easy, and only takes about thirty minutes to check. You just need a 10mm deep socket and an 8mm socket. unbolt the four 10mm nuts holding the coil pack bracket to the cover, then unplug the wires from the coil packs and move the pack assembly out of the way. The you just have to disconnect the breather hose and unbolt the four 8mm valve cover bolts.

Only for AFM 5.3s right?

Yes, it’s the AFM that causes the oil to drip. Ours was fouling up the spark plug so bad within 10k miles that we’d get misfires.

Any torque specs I should be aware of?

I think it’s around 8 lb-ft. Basically just snug, not cranked down.

I forgot to reply a sarcastic comment since they’re made in Mexico valve cover. So here goes. “Bigly sad liberal GM makes valve covers in Mexico. Time for the WALL. Very unfair to LADA!”

The guy helping me put them in was born in Mexico City. Bigly sad of me!

Looks like those are both stamped with the same GM part number. What part number should we order, from where, and how do we know we’re getting the updated one?
