Right, so I took the day off today for two reasons: to work on my truck and to listen to Chris Sale’s second start for the Boston Red Sox while I was working on the truck. Somehow, I’ve actually been successful at both.

Kinja'd!!!

Last time I checked in I had two wheels done and liked the look enough that I pressed on with it. I got better at using the Plastidip as I went on, so the front right wheel is the first/worst and the left rear is last/best. I still don’t think I did a very good job overall, but I just wasn’t super concerned because it’s a temporary thing. That said, I’m very happy with how it turned out.

Kinja'd!!!

The Plastidip dries to more of a satin than flat black, which I was relieved by. I also sprayed my hubs with Rustoleum satin black to clean them up a little...I’ve got no interest in putting the factory center caps back on, though I may still Plastidip them just for fun.

Kinja'd!!!

Today was also the conclusion of a little thing I liked to call “Operation: FUCK YOU GOLD PACKAGE, FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU” and as you can see, it was a success. I also had to do the little ring around the power antenna, but I am finally mercifully gold-chrome trim free!

So...what do I do now? I guess I can cover my trunk shelf with carpet and be done with that, then I guess I’ll find a set of front mud flaps and a new stereo, but...then I think I’m done? No, that can’t be, I’ll find more shit to do. Maybe I’ll pull the trailer hitch and repaint it, but that’s reaching.

This is, by a wide margin, the most stuff I’ve done to a vehicle in probably the last ten years. It’s nice to see something that you had a vision for actually come to fruition.

Looks good. The dip layed down nicely.

FWIW, you could pull the factory roof rack. It’s not exactly durable or all that useful and the thing looks incredibly clean without the extra stuff on top.

He’s a stud. Through 7, 1 earned, 9 strikeouts, only 88 pitches. Sox gotta score some runs though, tie game right now.

I might have to take a look at that. I was considering a roof basket, and I wouldn’t need the rack for that. I assume there are some holes to plug if I go that route.

On these last two wheels it sat down really nice. It’s a lot warmer today than it was when I did the first one, which helped. Even now I’m looking at the first one and it’s really not even that bad, it’s just that the wheel is all oxidized and crusty so it still kinda looks craggy.

The center ribs can be left attached if you choose. The rails and crossbars are held in with eight M5 philips screws. Easy to pull if there’s no rust, quite painful if its a rusty mess. Could get a set screw and top it off with silicone.

I’m a fan of the stuff, no doubt. It’s very forgiving. I’m glad you were able to get better results and didn’t throw in the towel. Best part is if you don’t like it later on, you can peel it off and do something different. Looks really nice.

I almost peeled some of it off accidentally too, it stuck to the masking tape and it ripped off about an inch of it. I remasked that area, hit it again, and it blended right in. This won’t be the last time I use it now that I know how well it works.

I actually like the gold badges. They’d compliment the dark green of my RAV4 very well.

If my truck were green or black I 100% would have kept them...especially green because green and gold were my high school’s colors. But with the beige I just hated it.

I understand completely. By 2012, gold badges had faded out, so no gold for the RAV4.

Yeah, been there, done that. I now use the dip release on the rubber of the tire and over spray it and peel when dry, otherwise you need to pull the masking off when it’s still wet so it doesn’t grab the dip you want to keep on the wheel. You can always do the coats, then if it got too dry, you can hit just the edges with another coat to soften up the dip and then peel the masking. I’m glad you were able to touch it up successfully. The stuff can be pretty forgiving.

The dipyourcar channel on YouTube has all kinds of good videos about the stuff and the new colors. I think I’m going to go with black obsidian for my S8 wheels after I get the new tires. Glossy and metallic black, should be nice. Either that or the titanium, not sure yet. I had the gunmetal on my S4 and really liked it, but I want something a little different this time.

The top photo is the winter wheels with matte black, that’s after 3 winters, just a little peeling around the lug holes.
