Kinja'd!!!

Update: The order pickers are weird and the total lack of feedback through the controls isn’t my favourite thing ever. The electric Toyota forklift is nice, if a little annoying for the same reasons. I don’t like electric drivetrains I guess. The propane Doosan outside is my favourite so far. Time to go get used to them all more.

My work is bringing in an instructor to train me on their two forklifts and order pickers. I’ve never driven either before, so this should be interesting.

That bottom one is a hoot to drive. Takes some getting used to.

I used the red thing at a former job and it was pretty fun to drive around the ware house, we would have it up on 3 (or 2?) wheels thru the corners all the time*, never flipped though*. with a little practice you can also pull off a pretty sweet J-turn*.

*these maneuvers are in no way approved by the safety person, probably

I drove a propane-powered Mitsubishi similar to the top one. One of our favorite activities was power-sliding it through the puddle that developed at the bottom of the lower-warehouse ramp every time it rained. Getting back up that ramp was always a challenge in the wet.

Screw regulations and training. I used to beg and plead with absolutely everyone to just once let me drive the Genie scissor lift at my old work and absolutely no one would let me.

I drove a 14,000 lb marine forklift with 14' forks for years... without any official training. We also drove it literally into a river, at least a little bit, to pick up boats out of the water. Sometimes you’d reverse wheelie going down the ramp, so you had to go easy on the brakes. Which also didn’t work very well when they were wet. Good times, good times. At least we were only handling $100k boats.

You’ll be fine.

It’s kind of awesome how the Rube Goldbergian nature of the horrible things helps stick in your mind the exact fuckup that led to them. Could they have created the best safety video of all time just by engaging in parody? Probably.

As long as your not driving a reach stacker you’ll be fine. Also see if anyone can pick up a Nickel there’s a trick to it but it is doable. I’ve got 3 free lunches from it so far.

I learned how to drive a forklift before I had a license. Electric ones are the best IMO. Getting used to rear steering can take a bit. For really tight maneuvering I recommend left foot braking if the truck will let you. Some have a switch that doesn’t allow it.

once you do it a few times it becomes like second nature. I am licenced to drive our electric ones at work and you never forget either. Like a bike

Forklifts are easy, remember where your fork tips are and you’re fine.

Easy, you will be fine. I have to move stuff in our warehouse if nobody is around, so I am certified. I also drive boom lifts for rigging on a crowded show floor. I will say a nice Toyota is much nicer to drive than another one I tried.

Warehouse work got me along for damn near 10 years until getting through college and finding work in my field. I love driving powered equipmebt, especially forklifts. I’d do that shit forever if the pay was there.

I definitely prefer the forklifts to the order pickers. It feels like video game controls, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it

I got to drive fork lift at two jobs, one electric and one propane powered. Very fun, better than weighing trucks or washing out pepsi syrup reservoirs.

This is a bit less fun than beating on a Yaris all day, but it pays better. Those jobs sound rather unpleasant

When I worked at Pepsi I was a tank washer and fork lift driver because I had to move my own work around. I stayed away from moving product in the warehouse. One day a guy dumped a whole pallett of pepsi onto the floor. We had to throw away 1,000's of cans due to dents. It’s the tight space manuvering and stacking challenges I liked. I stacked the tanks 4-5 pallets high, so maybe 15 feet or so, but not very stable.

I had a job at a steel plant driving a Raymond like this:

Kinja'd!!!

I had to quit tho because it was a stand up job, and I had just got back to work from a back injury and apparently standing there holding pressure on the dead-man’s pedal with a bulging disc and sciatica was not a good thing.

Carrying around coils of steel the size of a small kitchen table that weighed as much as a full size truck was kinda cool tho.

They had 4-wheel steer. Learning to swing into and out of aisles and crabbing across the warehouse was fun. And I didn’t need a forklift license to drive it, somehow.
