True, but I feel that United should bear some responsibility since they are the ones contracting Republic for those flights. Also when customers are seeing airplanes with United on the side, purchasing tickets from United, receiving a United ticket, etc...as far as they are concerned it’s United Airlines. I doubt many people actually read the “Operated by Republic Airways” line on the boarding pass.

Yeah, sorry United is responsible for their subcontractors. To a passenger all of these flights are “United”. And if United did want to disassociate themselves with this, they could come out and condemn the action, but instead have just directed questions to the airport.

I don’t get why some enterprising souls didn’t take that $800 (x4), get another $100-200 (x4) for the hotel rooms, and just rent a car one-way to Louisville. It’s only a little over 300 miles. If they started before the security theater and waiting for the flight in the airport, they could have been there before the flight touched down. Each person walks away with probably 850-900 bucks for 5 hours of their time, not a horrible return.

This is such a short distance that a flight seems like a luxury, not a necessity.

Is it cash they’re handing out? It was my understanding that it was credit with the airline for future tickets. I’m not sure how the hotel would work though.

Ahh, if it’s a credit, I’m not sure I’d want it, either. Maybe... Big maybe.

Next time, the guy needs to upgrade to business class. Can’t sit in the wrong section and expect not to get roughed up.

IIRC, the hotel would almost assuredly be one they booked for you. Airlines always have a few rooms booked in hotels close to a hub due to when they bump people. So while they offered the $800 plus a night’s stay, the chance of someone actually seeing money out of this deal is suspect as it would all be vouchers.

Yup. These people are a representative of United. And the fact that Republic behaved in this manner means that it’s United’s ass that’s in the fryer now.

Now, I’m sure that they (United) will probably rein down on Republic, but the public perception is that this is all United’s fault.

You are right, but here is where the airlines blew it. When they make the offer, they give no assurance of how or when you get home. I had exactly the same thing happen to me and my wife a week ago on American in Chicago when they cancelled the flight. Home was 25o miles away and the next plane there was 2 days later. I had to beg enterprise for a one way which they ultimately agreed to.

It’s easy to assume you can get the one way rental but what if you don’t? That’s why people don’t take the deal. What regional airlines should do is announce “who would like $500 and a limo ride to Louisville, leaving in 20 minutes”. They need to offer a solution instead of just offering money.

Honestly, that would be a pretty reasonable offer...

Basically all rental places will do one-way, it’s just a question of how much they’ll charge you...
