For the record, I once posted an SL with handicap tags parked halfway in a spot and half on the diagonal lines saying genuinely that I thought it was brilliant parking. I was immediately taken to task by basically everyone with more common sense than I (so, everyone) who noted that people with wheelchairs actually need that space to unload their chairs. I felt really bad about not considering that afterwards.

This is true. I need that space to get my chair out as well. However, sometimes that area is on the right of the parking space, and there is no way to back into it. On those occasions, I will park partly in the cross hatched part on the right to give me enough space on the left to get out. Of course I always make sure I don’t block out anyone who would need that space from the other side with a valid handicap spot (like if a lift van comes while I’m gone) I couldn’t live with myself then.

What I’m saying is that your SL situation may not have been bad parking depending on the circumstance.
