Kinja'd!!!

A smaller bluetooth device that would replace the radio in my center console, so that my phone can connect to it and still play music through the car speakers? Blue GTO for your time.

What car do you want to put it in?

You have two options:

Add bluetooth capability to your existing stereo through one of several avenues.

Replace the stereo with an aftermarket bluetooth-equipped head unit.

3. buy new car with bluetooth audio support

probably the most expensive option though

I have bluetooth with the aftermarket radio the previous owner of my car installed. Trying to see if something can replace the radio to make room for other things.

why not just get a Bluetooth equipped receiver?

I am eternally in the midst of replacing the tape player component of my Honda’s stock stereo with a Chinese A2DP Bluetooth microcontroller.

I should really get it done one day and write about it.

That sounds like the answer I’m looking for

You need some kind of amplifier to power the speakers. If you removed the head unit and replaced it with some kind of bluetooth receiver you’d still need to put an amplifier somewhere in the car, and you’d need to rig up some kind of external volume control. It would definitely be jankity.

Something like this?

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/Digital+Media+Receivers/MVH-X390BT

It’s a regular DIN receiver but half the depth, has no CD slot, and of course does bluetooth. Also it’s only $90.

This is what will replace the head unit in my boat when the CD receiver fails. I’ve never put a CD in it, ever.

If you want to free some space on the central consolle you could always plug a Bluetooth receiver to an amp that runs to the speakers. Not sure how practical it would be but still...

What did you want to make room for?

if you can add an aux in somewhere those Bluetooth add on discs work pretty well for around $15.

SB360 I have this one, think it pops up for sale for less but still worth the $20 it sells for normally. Never an issue with the 3 I’ve had.

One of my favorite features of that unit - I use a Pioneer in my boat now, too - is the setting you can choose to have the screen shut off after a few seconds. It lights up if you do anything like change volume. But for the boat, this is HUGE because at night, you do not want a bright screen in your face. I even installed a kill switch for my regular dash lights.

There’s a cheaper version, ($80, big deal right?) that seems like it only lacks in the ability to be controlled by their proprietary smartphone app. Why would I want to control my receiver with my phone when I can reach the receiver and when most states prohibit smartphone use while driving anyway? Whatever.

Is the current aftermarket unit single din or double din? If double, you can always put in a new trim piece for a single din unit that either has a flat face or a small shelf space.

If you have a cassette deck, you can put in a cassette Bluetooth adapter

Honestly don’t know. I see what your saying but my goal is to remove the whole radio from the console.

There is probably a stereo delete trim available or you can fabricate based on a aftermarket trim piece. As far as the radio is concerned, you could hide an amp and bluetooth receiver in the console or glove box.

Since it hasn’t been suggested, perhaps this would work for you:

https://www.amazon.com/Kenwood-Compact-Automotive-Marine-Amplifier/dp/B00UTXQL74/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491839263&sr=8-1&keywords=kenwood+bluetooth+amp

This is an amp that can drive your speakers. Comes with a remote that you can wire, you can place it anywhere it fits. bluetooth goes straight to the amp, so no need for a head unit. no AM/FM capabilities though. Supposed to be about the size of two beer cans.
